Superhero films are some of the highest grossing of all time, amassing legions of fans and cult followings. Therefore, it was no surprise they made the crossover to the gaming world. The high-octane pace of superhero storylines and the intense battles between good, evil, and everything in between make for riveting gameplay. If you haven't played them already, here are some of the top current and upcoming superhero games to play on your Xbox.

Batman Gotham Knights 

The latest installment in the Batman series is due to come out in October 2022 after being rescheduled on several occasions. The long-awaited game is one of two Batman-related games set to be released in the next 18 months. In terms of storyline, the game is set after the death of Bruce Wayne/Batman, an event that saw crime in the city rise.

While Batman may not be center stage, there are plenty of other well-known characters, such as Robin and Batgirl, as well as a host of villains.  ExpressVPN’s guide to Batman villains provides an overview of some of the key baddies from the franchise, and their disguises, such as the iconic Harley Quinn. By day, she is a psychiatrist with a totally normal appearance, but when she turns into Harley Quinn, she is recognizable by her two-toned hair and baseball bat. Then, there is Poison Ivy, an almost geeky doctor, who transforms into a visage draped in plants when assuming her alter ego. While these don't appear in Gotham Knights, instead featuring Court of Owls, Mr. Freeze, and Penguin, they give you a good idea of the creativity and intrigue behind the franchise's fascinating characters.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

Scheduled for release just before Batman Gotham Knights, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is another excellent game for Xbox. Created by Firaxis Games in collaboration with Marvel, it will bring together a range of popular characters, including Avengers, X-Men, and the Runaways, amongst others. The idea behind the game is that each player will take on the role of “The Hunter”, who is a fully customizable superhero that can be male or female with changeable features and outfits.

Players can also pick the superpowers the superhero will have. The game brings together combat missions, interaction with superheroes, role playing, and partnering with other superheroes such as Captain America or Spiderman on missions. The core of the storyline is based on ancient mythology with a dash of evil,  but we do not want to spoil the surprise too much!

Guardians of the Galaxy

Not a new game but one for the Xbox superhero fans, Guardians of the Galaxy remains one of the most popular games of the genre. The game is based on the Marvel Comics franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, and was released in October 2021. It has been widely praised for the storyline and narrative, characters, quality, and presentation, although there is room for improvement when it comes to combat.

The team includes popular heroes such as Gamorra, Groot, Drax, Destroyer, and Rocket Raccoon, while the player holds the role of Peter Quill/Star-Lord. Most of the gameplay is linear in nature, but players can also explore different locations to find costumes, items, and components to enhance the gaming experience. After a substantial intergalactic conflict, the game centers on the heroes trying to capture a beast for a client while accidentally triggering several events with severe consequences.
