Throughout the past two decades there has been quite the battle between the biggest console offerings as both Sony and Microsoft battle to have the #1 console on the market – with the growth of mobile and alternative gaming types as you can visit here for more options particularly in games on chance, it has limited the potential pool of players somewhat, despite this console are still amongst the most popular option.

Based on pure sales figures alone, Sony has been pulling ahead with the PlayStation 5, and the expectation that the former will outsell the Xbox Series X/S by two-to-one this year doesn’t bode well for Xbox fans, but what’s causing the disparity?

Supply issues have certainly been up there as a reason why both consoles have struggled despite both being the fastest selling of the entire range of consoles – Phil Spencer, the head at Xbox, has stated too that the shortages aren’t due to a lack of consoles being produced but instead the scarcity by the huge demand caused throughout the pandemic for players to get their hands on the latest offerings. With the series X and S already outselling previous generations, the suggestion would be then that the console is thriving, but then what potentially leads to the two-to-one outselling figure that has been suggested?

Hardware may certainly be part of this – one of the more promising features to emerge in gaming in recent years has been the introduction of virtual reality, something with the Xbox Series X and S doesn’t officially support and something that will become a big selling point for the competitor in coming months with the official launch of PSVR 2 for next generation gaming – certainly whilst the hardware costs are coming down too it’s a great time to get involved in the VR space and not something that Microsoft seem too keen on pursuing.

A recent acquisition may look to off-set this, however, with the Microsoft acquisition of Activision-Blizzard which brings a huge catalogue of new titles to the ever-growing Xbox game pass, if Microsoft continue to work this angle of expanding new IPs and big publishers, it could provide something more unique, and put Microsoft on level footing with both Sony and Nintendo who have managed to collect many unique IPs of their own. There is certainly a potential for Microsoft to close the gap in a big way, but if current forecasts are anything to go by despite the great sales figures already the Series X will slowly start to fall behind its biggest rival, with both playing second fiddle to the Switch"
