o i got another question for ya..... is it possible to copy some files out of a working xbox hard drive and save them on to mine? The messed up xbox is V1.6, but the good xbox is older V1.4 or V1.5
The only way that I can think of to do this is to Hot swap BOTH drives at the SAME TIME, then boot to HDM 1.9 and copy one to the other. Just be ABSOLUTLY SURE which one you are copying to the other one.(You don't want to copy the bad one over the good one!) _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

I appreciate all of your guys' help. Tonight i am going to go home and try my own little version of your guys' hotswap. since i do not have a burnable drive on my computer i am stuck, so i thought that maybe using your guys' tips on how to unlock my xbox, steps right before actuall hotswaping. maybe once my xbox is unlock i can mess with the settings and upload a new dashboard. i tied it last night, but i did not realize that you had to unlock the drive. oops , but tonight i will see if this idea works. i will most likely post success or failure tomorrow. thanks again for all your help.

Just to save you some time, you should know that the XBox HDD cannot be read or modified by Windows/dos without a special driver. The XBox has a different File-System for storing data. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

I would reccomend a DVD burner. But it depends on the type of DVD drive your XBox has in it.
Check this out for more info:
There may be someone close to you that could burn a DVD-r for you and send it. (USPS Media Mail costs $2.00) _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

Since i do not have a dvd burner and it will take some time before i get one or find someone that does. I was wonderin... in order to perform a HOTSWAP you need that certain file. which then creates the .iso file. i was wondering, besides burning this to a dvd, can i use "Slayers Evox Auto Installer 2.6"? If i can not.... would putting a mod-chip in my xbox automatically create a new desktop, or would it just search for the clock? i donno, in the mean time i am going to try to find someone that has a dvd burner and try to get them to burn me a copy.

For a HotSwap you only need to have a CD-r that your computer can read. because that diak will not read in your Xbox no matter what media it is on. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

Hey guys, i got another question........... okay so i borrowed a cd-drive for a computer. i installed it on my computer and it worked fine. I turned off my computer to get ready and try the hotswap, but the cd would not boot. Do you think that i burnt the file to the cd wrong? i did everything exactly the way that pirrups tutorial said to do. I got the xboxhdm file and copied the ms dash board. then i created the linuix.iso file from the make-iso-win.bat file. i burnt the linuix.iso file to a disk, but the disk will not boot. did i burn the disk wrong or am i not properlly unlocking my hard drive?

You burn the generated .iso file. Sound like you did it right. Did you set your bios to boot to cd first? _________________

You do realize that Xbox HDM is made to be run on the computer and not the Xbox, right?
You also need to make sure that your computer's bios is setup to look at the CDrom for the first boot device. If you need help with this, just let me know.
Edit: Oops! Umm..good thought greven! _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

here's the thing. i did make it so it looked off the cd-drive first on a boot. But when i try to hotswap the xbox hd into the computer, it says invalid boot disc in A: I disable the floppy disk drive and uninstalled it. i even went to the system setup and disable the floppy disk, but it still says the invalid boot disc. i do not know what it going on. i just figured maybe the way i burnt the cd was wrong. i read on howto.txt in the hdm file that you are supposed to burn it in the .rar form and i did not.

You're not supposed to burn the .rar.

Your bios boot order should be cd-rom first, then probably floppy then hdd. Just to clarify though, you open your cd drive tray, put in the xboxhd disc, close, restart, and it says invalid disk in drive a is there anything in your floppy drive? if there is, take it out. _________________
