Hey SPPV,

I've got a guy from craiglist who can sell me the tower I put in the subject line. It was made in 2003 and has an Intel Pentium 4 CPU. It is a professional, not a consumer model.

I told him I wanted an AMD CPU since you suggested it. The seller is wondering whether having an AMD CPU is really that crucial or if the Intel Pentium 4 one will work just fine?

He went into the BIOS to tell me what kinds of settings he saw, while looking for something along the lines of 'autodetect'

He said the tower lets him change 'emulation type', 'multi-sector transfer 'and can configure it to '8' or '16' or 'disable' right now his is set to 16. It also has something called transfer mode, translation mode. Is this all too low-level for what I'll need?

Translation mode has these settings: 'off' 'bit shift', 'LBA assisted' or user. 'User' has three settings: 'cylinders', 'heads' and 'sectors' each of those has a number that can be modified.

The seller thinks these options might be related to using autobuilder.

Would an old pentium 2 machine work at all for autobuilder? (The seller thought I should ask).

I plan to meet with the guy Saturday at his house. He'll let my try out the autobuilder disk and plug in my IDE drive at his house to see if it'll work.

Do you think you could either provide skype support or let me chat with you here on HQ when I'm at his house? That might the process go a lot faster if we'll need to really screw with the BIOS settings.

Which one is he?

Well if he thinks he knows whats important for my app and people want to question my instructions for use, he can guide you and when you get frozen security trying to lock the HDD he can question AMD over Intel.

How many ways can I say it? Intel is a steaming pile of

Ive been building HDDs for a decade, Ive used more computers than NASA (j/k) and have NEVER seen an Intel tower that didnt freeze security.

Hi SPPV,

Ok I think your misinterpreting my posts. When I ask a question, I'm simply asking the question, I am NOT questioning or challenging your credentials, I'm simply asking to better understand the concept.

The reason the guy asked if AMD was crucial is because towers with AMD CPUs tend to be harder to find.

Normally people put them on custom towers. On the other hand, if I do find a custom tower with IDE connections, another seller will probably want to ask for more money since they put time into it.

How exactly does an Intel CPU 'freeze security'? Why would it prevent locking of the hard drive in the final step? Because it doesn't understand the command from the linux.iso disk?

I can look around more and try to find an AMD CPU tower with IDE ports, it's just gonna take longer to find. Craigslist didn't seem to have much variety with IDE towers Sad I might just have to shell out more at a used computer store, but those guys charge a lot for their old stuff. but they have rent pay too.

One other thing what do IDE dell towers use for CPUs? This softmodder was able to use his dell tower at 10:44 and 15:01?

This guy was simply using xboxhdm and had to FTP over his C, E etc drives into the appropriate folders for xboxhdm. Does autobuilder work completely different from xboxhdm in that it requires AMD CPU chips.

If the CPU chip in his tower is a clip in one, I could just buy his tower, get an AMD CPU chip on my own and plug it in, but I don't know if that's possible.

You cant tell CPU type from PC brand. Dell, Acer etc use both Intel and AMD. Its not a matter of misunderstanding but rather a matter of when people follow my instructions for my apps to the letter it means they can just glide through, not need any help etc. But when people start getting "creative" or thinking well gee this worked to run Puppy Linux so it must work for HDM they start getting self made problems. Which inevitably means there back here wanting help that they shouldnt have needed. Which in turn takes time away from the various projects Im personaly doing and the ones at Xtras Im helping with, and from helping others with what I would call legit issues.

I mentioned this before in the remove all softmod files thread, the issue with Intel PCs is the BIOS the majority of them ship with. It tends to freeze security and not have the auto-detection disable option in the BIOS. Which means you either have to find another PC to lock the HDD after building or are forced to do a hotswap with the HDD which runs a very real risk of killing the PC and or HDD. AMD is widel known in XBOX circles however to work very well for locking, Ive never had one fail and Ive used alot of em, plus virtualy every XBOX guru I know, going back to ldots (originaly wrote HDM) use and suggest using AMD whenever possible. People not in the scene dont understand exactly whats going on and loo at stuff from their PC experience, but how many of em actually have built an HDD? Used AutoBuilder/Kingroach/HDM? See what Im saying? And you gotta remember too that its the seller trying to push the tower o ya saying he thinks it will work, when I can see from your post of what he said, hes never used HDM or AutoBuilder. Its almost like getting advice on cancer from a gas station attendant Laughing

Also to truly test the PC would mean between 2-3 hours at his place running AutoBuilder, when you can be confident that any old AMD tower that runs will work for what you need.

Hey SPPV,

He definitely doesn't want to push the tower on me if it won't work. He knows nothing about xbox modding and doesn't play video games and admits there's some stuff he knows and some stuff he doesn't know. But he's curious to see how the program works and is letting me come over this weekend and play around with some of his spare IDE drives for fun with the tower and autobuilder disk.

Also it's an office and not a consumer model tower and has a ton of BIOS options on it. He understands that if the tower don't work, then I'm just gonna go elsewhere no harm, no foul. It is good of you to point out his interest in getting a tower sold possibly biasing what he says.

He's also selling me an 250GB IDE drive from a TIVO with 17,000 hrs on it and a S.M.A.R.T. rating of 77/100 for $20, and a 15inch LCD monitor with VGA cable for $20. That seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. but maybe you think that's a rip off. True/False?

Let me just ask this: if I spend 2-3 hours trying his tower, but it can't lock the HDD, is it possible to wipe the contents off a drive, buy a different tower (AMD) and redo the process? Or is it harder to clean the hard drive than one would think?

If the build is complete but it wont lock it all you need to do is lock it on another PC. No need to rebuild it. Business or consumer really doesnt make much difference. The PC I use is a biz refurb Athlon64 HP. Alot of times I find the biz refurb towers to be wimpier since they use em for spreadsheets and accounting and lame shit like that Very Happy Where as the consumer models in alot of cases are meant for multimedia etc so have more juice. But they dot for the most part use special parts and BIOS on biz models compared to consumer. Hell most biz towers were just run of the mill towers they bought at Staples or Best Buy.

Ive got a Celeron tower sitting here that builds no problem but cant lock/unlock for shit. Thats what you gotta watch out for. If I were you Id just run it till its formatted and created the partitions then reboot and try to lock it. That way you know right off the hop if its good or not. If it locks ok, then unlock it and build the HDD, lock it and put it in your XBOX and enjoy. Make sure you use a confirmed lockable HDD.

Ok then I'll test a drive (~10GB) on his tower by trying to the unlock/lock commands in autobuilder right away? That way I would know whether the tower is worth buying immediately?

Or just go through all the steps of copying the xbox firmware and emulators to the HDD, reboot, then see if it locks? and if it doesn't lock just use another tower with locking/unlocking capabilities then it'll be finished?

Either option is doable for me.

Much thanks for the quick replies

I don't get it. You don't need a while system to be IDE-centric to use the IDE connector. I have an AMD processor and mobo and it has IDE capability. Actually my DVD drive uses IDE and my SSD and HDD use SATA. You can mix it up.

@Preshistoricman,

Not to sound like a total idiot, but what do you mean by a 'while system'?

Also SPPV has instructed me not to deal with SATA to PATA adapters and just get a tower with only IDE connectors or one with IDE/SATA connectors.

What I'm trying to hash out with him is whether I can get away with using a non-AMD CPU tower vs an AMD one.

What Prehistoricman is saying is the tower doesnt have to only have IDE ports. Towers that have both SATA and IDE work. My old custom build tower, the HP (barf) I use now and my gaming tower all have SATA and IDE and work fine you just ignore the SATA ports cause they are useless. Trying to hook an adapter to the SATA port is just pissing in the wind, HDM only detects devices hooked to IDE ports, the linux kernel used does not support SATA.

Question on all of this:

A guy in this video is using a Dell computer, shown at around 10:32
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlF8UDedjYc
I actually checked the specs of the computer he is using, and surprisingly, it's a Intel processor.
Quote:
Processor / Chipset
Type Intel Pentium III 1.0 GHz
CPU Qty 1.0
Max CPU Qty 1.0
Chipset Type Intel 815E
Front Side Bus 133.0 MHz

And since this worked for him...wouldn't this mean that some Intels work and some don't?

Yes which Ive said since the beginning. Thing is most dont work so its best to just ignore them as a possibility. Its like a lottery pretty much with Intel. If you happen to own one theres no harm in trying it. But if youre gonna go looking to buy a tower best to be smart and stick to AMD

Well, I got a tower right here, and I'm not spending a bunch of money for an AMD tower, so...yep.

@SPPV,

My last question there got lost in the recent convo.

So for the seller's tower, you would simply recommend using the locking features of autobuilder's linux.iso program right away to see if the tower will be worth buying?

It it were to lock, simply use the unlock command and then proceed to copy over the files as you instructed in a different thread?

You can check pretty quick if it will work. Either do like I said above and format the HDD and build the parition table then just reboot and pick option 3 and try to lock it. If it fails look to, see if it says security frozen. If it does reboot the PC go into BIOS and check to see if it will allow you to either disable or set to manual the Primary IDE channel detection.

What happens is the BIOS will take "ownership" of the HDD and freeze security, and if you cant disable that your forced to try a hotswap lock which is not recommended. Or use a different PC or a chipped XBOX to lock it
