As long as the xbox is soft modded this should work fine, it might just come down to the format of disc you are using.
I had a Samsung 605 drive so the thing would read any disk i put in it but most drives only want to read the DVD -R disks.
If you use the program i linked you to it clones from the PC so there is no need to boot a disk from the xbox.

This doesn't seem to be my lucky day...I burned it to a DVD...it refuses to boot on a PC bur boots on my xbox but then I cannot clone my hdd's since I have to remove the cable from the DVD drive
when the disc loads, run chimp (chimps now running in memory) disconnect the IDE cable from the DVD drive, connect it to the new hard drive and then follow the options onscreen.
(from the instant you click to run the chimp program you have 10 seconds to swap the IDE cable from DVD Rom to new HDD) _________________

When I boot the cd I get a number of errors but I end up at a a gentoo menu and can start some hd util but I guess I'm too slow when I switch over the cable to my hdd..

Just have the disk drive as loose as you can before you start so you dont need to pull on it as long.

Once your done building the hardrive with XBOXHDM put it into your xbox, you may need to reinstall your softmod (I had to) then in the system menu for unleashx click on enable g drive then use your favourite tool for formating I used Ultimate boot disc 4. Now whatever is above 137 will be available.
