After lurking in the forums for almost a month trying to suck up as much info as I can...I've taken to the darkside and ordered a mod-chip. I'm just worried about turning my xbox into a giant paperweight.
I'm ready to use the auto installer and I have a point of confusion I can't seem to find an answer for..namely if I want install a bigger hard drive, can I just drop in the new drive prior to runing the auto-install?? Or do I need to use the original drive first, autoinstall to flash the bios, and then upgrade the drive?
If I can just drop the new drive in first, does that mean my orginal drive can be put back in and restore everyting to factory (minus the mod chip of course)?
Thanks for your input!

What modchip did you end up ordering?
The way I upgraded my HD was this.
I set the jumper on the new HD to "SLAVE".
Disconnected the IDE from the DVD drive and inserted it into the new HD. I then disconnected the power cable that was going to the original HD and connected it to a Y cord adapter. I then plugged the two molex connectors coming off the Y cord adapter into both HD's.
From there I followed the prompts that my modchip's OS gave me and copied all the info from my current drive to my new drive.
I then just replaced the old with the new, set the new to "MASTER" and made sure it was locked, yada yada yada.
Now, since I haven't used the autoinstaller I don't know if it has the MS Dashboard on it or not.
Additionally, you will probably have to flash your modchips bios prior to running the autoinstaller. I am sure there are a few people here that can fill some of the holes I still have left in what the autoinstaller can and can't do once you let them know what chip you ordered and what size HD you are getting into. Some bios' won't handle larger HD's so you need to make sure you install the correct bios for your HD size.
Otherwise, you may purchase a 250Gig HD, but only get to use 120Gig of it.
Good luck and keep us posted.

If your modchip doen't support drive upgrades like the xenium you can normally set your new hard drive to cable select and put it in. Download and burn the xbox-hq auto installer, it does have the msdashboard on it. Just slect rebuild large hard drive and everything is done for you. Just make sure you have a backup of all game saves and anything else you want to keep off the old drive. Then run a program like config magic to lock the new hard drive and you're all set. Yes you could also put back your old drive at any time. _________________ V1.4 Xbox

I ended up getting an Xecuter 2.3b lite (planning to do the pin header install)as they seemed to have the largest install base. I want the "most common" setup I can find..figure there will be plenty of you out there w/ the same setup in case things go wrong...hopefully someone's been there before.
However, I now wish I had gone for the Xenium...seems to have more features.
I've got a spare 40gb drive I'm planning to drop in so I probably don't have to worry about the bios.
Sounds like your method might allow me to keep my game saves...if I can copy them onto the new drive at some point via ftp.
Is the Evox Bios still considered the "IT" bios to have??? Do most bios' work w/ most chips? Or are there only certain bios' compatable w/ a chip??
Lots of ??? Hopefully the fog will clear and I'll have a clue someday.

Most chips can use any BIOS as long as you have enough space on the chip for the flash. I have a xenium but I use an xecter bios. The 4983.67 which in my opinion is one of the best around. To copy your saved games just make a backup of the folders TDATA and UDATA on the e drive and then restore them to your new hard drive. _________________ V1.4 Xbox

I went for the X2.3B Lite+ for easy of installation. the solder points are awefully small.
you'll have to flash your bios before you do anything. the autoinstaller should set up a network for you (Slayer's did) so you can use Xbox Saves Manager to backup your game data. Then all you have to do is drop in the new drive, format and rebuild, then copy all your data back over.
that's what i did. my retail drive hasn't been touched, just in case. _________________ XBOX v1.1 - Philips DVD

Did my mod-chip install last night..ended up using the wires method. Yes, the d0 is small but it really wasn't that tough...just make sure you're not in a hurry..take your time and shouldn't be a prob.
Ok now I'm really confused... I have to flash my bios before running the autoinstaller?? I plan on using DJB's not slayers. From what I understand DJB's installer flashes the bios, formats the drive installs the dashboard and then installs the apps & network.
I'm thinking I may use ghost to copy the current disk onto the new one, then running the auto inst...that will allow me to keep the factory drv. intact. Then once the bios has been flashed and the new drive has been setup...drop the factory back in and grab the game saves via ftp! Sounds good on paper...like most ideas, turn into a steamng pile. Any thoughts??

slayer's does all the same stuff.
i just picked a bios to put on a disc (with dummy space) to get past the FlashBios screen. then you can use an installer to do the rest. _________________ XBOX v1.1 - Philips DVD

Is it because I wont be able to unlock the factory drive for cloning until I flash the bios?? And/or it wont boot with a non-factory w/o flashing first?

Hey, not to get off the beaten path, but since we are talking about Xecuter2.3's I have a quick bios flashing question. I have always used Xeniums which can be flashed via DVD Drive...'sweet', but I thougth that Xectuers had to be flashed via a programmer prior to installing the chip.
Is that accurate? And, if it is, once the chip is flashed then installed will DJB's autoinstaller be able to reflash if needed, or do you have to remove the chip and flash with the programmer. I wanted to give a Xecuter2.3 chip a whack on a new xbox that I have just sitting in a box. I wanted to be able to install both Xeniums and X2.3's.
Thanks! _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

The xecuters come with a FlashBios. in other words, you can't do crap with it until you put a new bios on it. it allows the mod to turn on and that's it. it looks for bios.bin on the disc and does the rest (if it can read it).
otherwise i use evox 3935 to flash the bios. this last time though the process stopped so i had to buy a programmer. i put what i want in the bios folder and select it from the list. _________________ XBOX v1.1 - Philips DVD

Realmccloy,
DJB's XBOXHQ AUTOINSTALLER will flash any modchip at all.. As long as the modchip is in WRITE ENABLED MOD.. I flash my Cheap MOD 49LF020 using the XBOXHQ Autoinstaller but mine is always in WRITE ENABLED MODE..
Just an update, was up til 3am messin round w/ stuff.
At the flashbios on startup I could not get the hq autoinstaller to flash the bios. Kept gettiing no bios found...halting. I created a bios flash cdrw, (same media and nero settings as the hq-inst) successfully flahed the bios...after flashing I could now run the HQ-disk, unlocked my factory drive, ran ghost to clone it to my 40gb, installed the 40, installed evox & apps. Running like a champ now!! I'm gonna try my first iso extract tonight and try making a backup. Thanks for everyone's input!
