I installed my solderless chameleon mod chip back in november, and its still running strong today. The xbox has been moved around and taken on many trips and I have never had to tighten or mess with the mod chip once.
Solderless mod chips can be great as long as theyre done right. _________________ XBOX v1.0:

Great news man!! I am sure the people who are considering solderless avenues are glad to hear that. With the all the negativity that sometimes is directed toward the solderless chip market, not that I haven't taken my shots, it's nice to hear a positive result! Wow, 8 months....you are only about two or three away before one of MS's installed hardware devices fail...HA...Just kidding. I just see so many freaking dvd drive failures I wish MS would do something about it instead of sticking people!
I always wondered since I play all my games off of the HD now if I will get at least two years out of my DVD drive? It's a thought. From what I hear the lasers just plain ol' get weak. A friend of mine never shuts her xbox off and always has a disk in it too. About nine months after she started getting dirty disk errors on brand new games! Usually larger file games that utilized multi-layer recording. Anyone else out there always leave their machine on? Any negative results?

Well the xbox is over a year old, but i rarely use the dvd drive, Only to copy my games onto the HDD. So lets keep our fingers crossed that we gain some extra time from that. I've heard the the avg life span of the thompson is 1.5 to 2 years, in that case, mine's going to die soon
but hopefully it wont.
I have had a couple buddies that have bought used xbox's or refurbished ones and have gotten the dirty disk info rather quickly, just microsofts way to make us put more money into it. HOpefully Xbox 2 will be a little bit more reliable....... _________________ XBOX v1.0:

Yeah, MS + Hardware = Inadequacy.
I started thinking about the fact that I don't use my DVD drive as much anymore, but wait...I use my HD a hell of a lot more. Thank god they didn't make that one...HA _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

Yeah True that. MS brought us the xbox and we all love it, but we love it more for what we can do with it past what MS thought we'd be able too.
I was looking through some different forums and tutorials and when Mine dies, I might just mod it to use a different, normal dvd drive. _________________ XBOX v1.0:

I've had me solderless chameleon for around 6 months and its going good.
My phillips dvd drive aint its been making wierd noises since i took the cover 6 six months. I dies when i tries to read scratched dvds especially movies.
Also id be concerned with the HDD as well. Since you turning on and off the xbox so often it has to have a negative effect with the cold reboot. And remember the Cgate only have a one year warranty. My hdd is starting you make noises. Less then a year it will be recked. _________________ Xbox v1.2

MS used some cheap dvd drives, and the life span that i've heard is only 1-2 years. I've also heard that by modding your xbox you can prolong the life of your dvd drive because it doesnt get as much use as it would before after its modded. But I havent seen any first hand proof of that yet.
As for the HDD's, mine stays on a lot, whether I forget to turn it off or just leave it on, it stays on for a long period of time. It does get a lot of cold starts. I had a 120 for about 9 months and it worked great, never mand any nosies and ran smoothly. Now that I have the 160 HDD I plan on puytting the 120 into my back up computer.
Anywasy, congrates on the chameleon and good luck with your drives. _________________ XBOX v1.0:
