Hi, well this is my first post and i need help softmodding my xbox
I have gone through at least 12 diffrent kinds of game saves for mechassult.
And almost all of them have the following effect: My screen goes black and will not do anything until i power off my xbox.
A service page will come up, saying that my xbox requires service, in about 5 diff languages.
It starts loading and recommends me to use a tool, and when i do use that tool it crashes and says that it requires service, whiel the xbox button goes through green- to orange- to red.
I am using action replay to softmod my xbox, and mechassualt. (and i am about 95% sure it is the right version of mechassulat) The current game save i am using is called: MechAssaul_RunLinux which has no affect on my xbox other then making the screen goes black.
and other info: box was made in 2002. i have used new games on my xbox (halo 2, conker, ninja gaiden etc.) and plus i was told to del my entire mechassult catagorie b 4 trinyg the run linux.
please help me, i wanna soft mod my xbox bad!!!

Let me start off by saying that I've never use Mechassault to softmod, but I've used 007.AUF and SplinterCell. I'm assuming the process is similar.
First and foremost, it's been said many times that Action Replay savecards aren't the most reliable because they can corrupt gamesaves. So I wouldn't hit the panic button right away and conclude that you've done it. I would, however, ask that you make sure that you're using the ORIGINAL version of the game, not the Platinum (AKA Greatest Hits) version. The Platinum versions seem to have patched the ability to softmod this way.
Second, make sure you can still load your games. This is easily done by starting the XBOX with the game in the drive. If the game boots, then all is certainly not lost. Also, make a note of any Error codes that might pop up in the top-right corner of the screen. Click this link to compare the error code with known definitions. This also helps to narrow down the problem at hand.
Third, and especially important if the XBOX boots into games but not the dash, go get an official XBOX memory card and load the gamesave to that. I haven't heard of people having issues with the XBOX cards yet, so unless someone else can enlighten me to a potential problem, you shouldn't have a one.

so pretty much go get a better memory card, like a 32 mb (cause the AR is 8 mb) and i did find out wat error it was, it is # 20:
Service Error 20:
Info: The dashboard was attempted to load and failed; It was a cold boot, and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed, but it (for some reason) needed to be noted that the dvd passed the challenge/response authentication.
Solution: None

And about the mechassult disk, yes it not plathit, or does nto have the "not for resale" and here is the code formt he bottom of the disc.

My xbox runs games fine, even if the disk is in, and the xbox is off and u turn it on. it boots up.
And it goes right to the game.
and quesiton does thje version of my xbox matter at all? and the make year???

Xbox version doesn't matter with doing the softmod.
A official 8mb M$ memory card will do the job. I have been using a Mad Catz card that was like $8. _________________ Xbox v1.3

As it was previously mentioned, your XBOX version doesn't matter for a softmod, but your game version does.
Glad to hear your XBOX boots to games normally. Go and get an Official XBOX memory card and load the save game onto that. The rest of the tutorial can be found in the AID 2.0 manual. I assume you have it. If not, it can easily be found at the usual place. _________________ XBOX V 1.0 (softmod)

And could i have a recommendation on the dashboard type that i should try to run, i am looking at unleash x but any other suggestions?

"Cold Boot" refers to starting the XBOX up from standby, as opposed to resetting the xbox. Think of it in terms of computers. If you turn your computer on every day to use it as opposed to running it 24/7 (like servers and the hardcore computer users do), this is known as a Cold Boot. A more proper definition would be to completely power down your computer (or XBOX in this case) long enough for the RAM to clear. This usually takes between 30 seconds to a minute. Then you turn your computer on. A simplistic, but to-the-point way of remembering what Cold-boot means is starting the computer from a power-off status. If your computer is off, and you turn the switch on, you're performing a Cold Boot.
As for dashes, I prefer UnleashX over other dashes like EvoX and Avalaunch. It all depends on how you feel comfortable with navigating through the system. I'd recommend that you start off with EvoX (which the SID install does by default after a correct softmod installation) and installing other dashes as Applications, just to see how you like them. After you've decided which one is more comfortable for you to use, whether it be a simple matter of navigation or for more advanced features like Gamesave managers and system manipulation through the dashboard (like fan speed control, eject light manipulation, etc.). Asthetics should be second to Functionality, so you'll have to play around with the various dashes to find one that's comfortable for you. I found that UnleashX was the best blend of function and form for me. Certainly not everyone would agree, which is why I'd recommend installing a few of them as apps before you settle. The AID2 disc has a special section just for that, which makes it easier.
When your softmod is successfully loaded and boots properly, pop in the AID2 disc and go to install Applications, then Install Dashboards. Remember to install accordingly with your hard drive type each time for the optimal result after you've chosen which ones you want to test out. EvoX will auto-detect them in the Applications folder the next time you go to your dashboard, so it's easier to find them when they've been installed.
After you've settled on one, pop that AID2 disc in again, format C, install the proper dash combo. I use MSDash+PBL, without tray menu, and installed Dashboard UnleashX to E:. Works every time. _________________ XBOX V 1.0 (softmod)

wowo, lots of help and question i want to do this but i have heard from some people that i will not be able to access xbox live once i have softmodded my xbox, if is that true, is there some program or some way i could access it?
Okay so i download the Aid file the iso image. and wat do i do next? not sure aobut the gamesave were to find that.

so i won't be able to go online? but how do those haxors in halo 2 manage to?
Do they just delete the main maps formthe disk transfer the modded maps to there xbox uninstall the mod or the dash, and then jam the disk?
whooops and sry i am getting this error instead of 20

Info: This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag. This error seems to show up more often when hacking/patching/customizing the original dashboard.
Solution: You probably are running the wrong dashboard for your xbox version. Use the 'HQ Auto Installer Deluxe' to reinstall your Retail M$ Dashboard.. It should fix this error no matter which xbox version you have.. If not try downloading another Retail M$ Dashboard.

Rule of Thumb No.1 is to make an EEPROM backup (in case you wanted to install a larger HDD in the future) and an MS Backup (so you can restore to factory settings and don't get zapped for using Live). I also hear that you can install a factory dash from the AID2 disc, though I've never used it because I don't go on Live, and I pound that fact into the heads of anyone's XBOX I softmod before I even touch it.
If you want to play on Live, a good way to do that would be to softmod, make a second HDD for your softmod, and restore the stock HDD back to factory so you can swap between them for Live play. TeamXtender makes a HW mod that allows for multiple HDDs to be installed on one XBOX, so if you have the cash and the desire, check them out.
Otherwise, forget about Live, and check out the alternetives like NexBC or Gamespy Arcade XBOX Tunnel. Both are legal, and both are free to use. If you go that route, I'd recommend using NexBC as the variety of supported games is much greater than GameSpy. _________________ XBOX V 1.0 (softmod)

Okay this is probably gonna be on of my last posts, hopin i get an answer. But for the servcie error 21 what could i do? Could i delete every thing off of my harddrive? Or is there an other way?

Now i am not sure if "Auto- Installer. Deluxe.v2.0.Xbox-Hq" is the right "solution" for this problem that i am currently downloading from bittorrent.
Would i Still not need to use the SID? Any ideas etc. would help greatly
