I don't know too much but here we go. I haven't purchased a xbox yet and am wondering if i should get a premodded one. this looks like the more expensive root though so i am wondering what modchip to get? I only want to pay $50 max for a chip and am hoping to find the console for $100. Mostly what i want to do with an xbox is play halo and use other apps to play emus and play xvid and divx stuff like that.
Thanks for the support

Well, if you're looking for opinions you came to the right spot. Here's my penny and a half.
I went the premodded route. Firstly, because I didn't trust myself with a soldering iron and I knew jack shit about modding. Keep in mind, I can repair any piece of hardware on my PC, but opening and chipping the xbox was a new animal for me. Also, loading all the apps, bios, and dashboard was very intimidating to me at first. Since I purchased my premodded machine in April, I have installed many apps, emu's and roms. I paid 389.00 for my machine and here is what I got.
A brand new xbox version 1.5
A 120Gig HD
Xenium Chip with Xecuter2 bios
Evolution X Dashboard installed
Avalaunch Installed
Surreal 64 Emulator Installed
NES Emulator on Disk
MameX Emulator installed, however wasn't working and had to remove and install on my own.
DVD2Xbox (app)
PXX HD Loader (app to back up games)
XBMP (Xbox Media Player)
Xbox FTP
60+ Skins
Xbox Explorer
Xbox Watch
DVD Region and dongle free
That pic doesn't show the skin, just the wire. At night it is much brighter.
I know I am leaving a few things out. But, my point is as soon as I opened my machine I was gaming. Only took 7 days from the time I ordered till the time I received and the guy who did it was awesome. Very professional. Sure, I could have saved about a hundred dollars or so if I would have done it myself, but I just wasn't ready.
Even now, I know I can finally chip my own machines....but, I also know that for a small premium I can have the convenience of having everything I want done for me. If you chip your own machine and fry your motherboard, then it's on you. If someone else frys it, it's on them.
If you decide to chip it yourself, you can always buy a refurbished xbox to cut costs. Or a used one for that matter. I opted for new. Most people who do premods also offer a 90 day warranty. I would stick to premodders who do.
Whatever way you decide to go good luck. We are always here to help if you get in a bind! _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

Buying a premodded is ok, but ofcourse if you know someone who can do it personally it's better. That way you can determine what modchip you want, what size HDD you want etc..
You just have to consider all your options...

Hey if you are unsure in any way get a premod.
As for me I wanted the challenge of doing it myself. I guess just wanted the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself. I had no soldering skills at all
But did it myself and now I can solder any thing.
Have done many of mod now and not a bit scared.
Hope this helps you make up your mind.
As for chip price you can get a good chip for 50 bucks.
You can get a used xbox for 99 bucks.
Hard drive 120Gb for 100 bucks.

Hehehe, I'd be too scared I'd stuff up my Xbox, you've got more guts than me.
I'd eventually wanna get into some kind of modchipping, the only thing is I'd want to be able to do it properly, and not too messy.
Forahobby and a friend of his modded my Xbox (and a fine job they did too I may add!!) with basically just the Xbox, the HDD I gave them, plus the $$$ for the installation and modchip.
Even if you can't solder and don't know much about electronics, find a friend who atleast knows simple soldering, you could be saved time and money rather than buying a premod. I don't have anything personal against Premods, it's just that it makes you feel good when you know EXACTLY what's in your Xbox, to your specifications...

DJB has a point. Most premodders only give you an option of what chip they have. That is why I went with the guy I did, he had three chips to choose from. Xecuter 2.3, Xenium, and I can't remember the third...I think aladdin or something like that. You won't find that option too much. But, you can always shop a modder that uses the chip you prefer. _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter

I was in the same situation as you a couple of weeks ago, not sure if I wanted to go the premodded way my buddy went. But seeing it was cheaper to do it myself as most things are, I took the plunge. I know my stuff when it comes to building computers, so I figured what the heck.
I personally would recommend doing it yourself, you learn a lot. Mainly because you are forced to read in forums like this one and learn all about your xbox. The are many websites out there, most have dedicated Newbie sections. And once you learn the basics, it really is pretty easy.
Which ever way you go, you will be very pleased with the way your Xbox is going to turn out, but you'll definetely have a little more pride and bragging rights if you build your own. _________________ Halo SE Xbox

Not wrong.. When you do it yourself and put in the hard yards to learn it all you will love it.
How about this..
My first XBOX mod:
May 2002, Enigmah-X Modchip (29 wires)
Bugger all information was around at this stage for modchips and also
ProjectX were the only group releasing ISOS at this stage.
I sat my arse down for over 4 hrs and soldiered 29 x wires onto my motherboard. I had no previous solider experience and was worried.. I decide to get some old PC motherboards and practice soldiering onto them directly.. I wanted to see if i could do it.
And here we are: XBOX-HQ.COM!
i bet your all glad my little brother showed me his XBOX! heheh lol
I have taken a begginners electronics class and soldered a whole circuit board (little lights flashing back and forth) so I think I going to buy one but I don't have a clue which one to get. I've looked at Alladin which seems to be the cheapest and then the Xenium which seems to be the more expensive one. I also have a 120 Gig harddrive in my comp and was thinking I would pull it out and place it in the xbox then ftp to my pc if i want the space.
Thanks for the feedback Now I just need to know which chip ups and downs stuff like that Thanks!

You will get a lot of different answers when it comes to chips too. People will say, "go Xenium", "go Xecuter", "go solderless", "don't go solderless". Everyone has key points they like about their chip. I went with the Xenium because I didn't want an external switch for XBOX Live. I have heard good things about both Xeniums and Xecuters. They are probably the two that I hear about the most, mainly the Xectuter though. Whether it's just good marketing, or it's a superior chip is a mystery to me since I don't have a machine with one. Asmunch is trying to talk me into modding one of my other xbox's with a Xecuter 2.3. I may just go ahead to do it. DJB mentioned that he liked the Xecuter due to some of it's features versus the Xenium. I think what you need to do is write a list of everything you want your machine to do now, and maybe what you may want it to possibly do in the near future. Then, look and see what chip fits that category the best. DJB also has mentioned a chip called Smartxx or something like that. It is supposed to be a very nice chip. Keep us posted and let us know what you end up with. Any info you can provide can help others make informed decisions too. _________________ Good Deals: Death@Hand, funkydopenloven, StaticMind, Slamscaper, PorscheXboxter
