I my frinds xbox that I am trying to repair. The problem happened after
using Auto Installer Disk. I can boot original games but cannot
bring up the M$ Dash. I tried to place the hard drive in a modded
xbox but I cannot unlock it and cannot restore it. The game save
is not located on the hard drive for the softmod to work. How can
I restore the HD back? It appears that the original retail drive
is wiped out. I do not have the EEPROM.BIN file as well.
Any suggestions?
More info:
I can run originals and save to the hard drive. However I cannot uise the memory card to write saves to the hard drive because I cannot enter in M$ Dash. I get a service message if I boot to Xbox live or no disc.

Thanks!!!
John

U have to do the hotswap trick and use XBOXHDM to repair the C: partiton. AS long as you have access to an MS backup file, XBOXHDM can repair it. Just make sure you read the documentation that comes with xboxhdm you'll be able to figure it out

I came into this EXACT situation myself, I'm not sure if my solution will work for you, but it worked for me.

I was using SID 2.0 with the Splinter Cell hack, I simply booted the original Splinter Cell and the exploit ran off the connected memory card. I didn't need to copy the saves to the harddrive to run the exploit. Once I got to the softmod menu, I installed the softmod, and Evox and rebooted the xbox with the auto installer deluxe 1.1 in the drive. I cleared the C drive and installed the microsoft dashboard. This left me with a perfectly non-modded xbox with dashboard 5960. From there I just reinstalled the softmod using SID and everything worked perfectly.
