I just got interested in building new cases & tried a laptop drive in my box...it worked!

You must use a '250 ide kit' or I can draw up some schematics real quick, but it would be great for a tiny xbox Wink

It patches right into a molex connector but has a 470 ohm resistor to lower the power. I will make the cable adapter to do it, if anyone can tell me where to purchase the small 2.5" female connector. I cant find it anywhere. It even has an activity LED built in the circuit

Here is a ipc of it.

They are $15, but a DIY kit is only $7.99. I assume the parts are around $4. The pin header is easy to get but I would like to directly solder the larger pin header to the smaller 2.5 female plug & eliminate the PCB board

Does anyone know the proper name for the 2.5 plug?

Also, I am not familiar with the extender case...can you only select 1 HD at a time? I am sure it has been asked but I couldnt locate the post, but can a HD be plugged into the DVD IDE spot? power wouldnt be an issue with 2 small laptop drives. Just a small ass case with 2 small ass HDs

I think you can have more IDE devices on an Xbox. Or, do you mean have two IDE devices operational at one time? I think maybe that's what you meant. Because besides the Xtender Case I have seen other cable setups that include external switches to allow you to have three hard drives. But, just like the Xtender case you can only have one of the HD's actually running at a time.

I am wondering if there is some sort of bios check that is ran or something, so that you could eliminate the DVD Drive from operating in effort to allow a different IDE device to be running. Or, if the DVD Drive isn't found does the Xbox shit the bed and give you errors?

Dude, what would rule is, if you made an Xbox out of a laptop. I have talked to some people who have purchased older bulkier IBM thnkpads in effort to try to get this done, but so far nobody has hit me up with the final working product. That would be so sweet for traveling. Just pop open your laptop and game on your modded machine....bad ass...totally bad ass.

I saw a modder that had 1 or 2 HDs & no DVD. ...maybe it wasnt operational

ModGod are you saying I will get an error if the DVD isnt plugged in? I also have a dell slim DVD but I am not to sure how that would connect. It has a 1" connection with about 100 copper leads in it, I have never seen that connector anywhere! Do you happen to know what a 2.5 drive connection is called?

My idea is to get a 9x8x3 aluminum case fabricated to fit a mobo PS & HD, but if a DVD must be used I guess my idea is sort of shot....unless I can find a old dell laptop to rip out the DVD bay.

One thing you guys are missing, is the fact that the xbox dvd roms are different in the way that they spin and/or read. This would be very difficult to do on a laptop dvd rom, not to mention getting the firmware to work also.

I think there is an error if you don't plug in your dvd rom, pretty easy check though wouldn't it be?

Sounds pretty cool though. Lemme know if anymore ideas come up.

Do you mean the connection on the slim DVD? it is below, but like sjohn said I dont think it would work either or else everyone would be moddind PC dvd drives to replace stock drives

The 2.5" connection is what I need the name of. It is just a smaller version of an IDE connector & smaller pin header.

Would you get an error with 2 HDs on the IDE cable?

You can only have 2 IDE drives (Hard Drive, DVD, Etc) TOTAL running at one time. The IDE port on the motherport is designed so that it will only operate two different drives (1hd/1dvd) for example. Im sure if you messed with it enough you could add a 2nd ide chain like a computer has, and be able to use 4 drives simultaneously.

As far as dvd not working unplugged, give it a try jiggy, if it doesn't work, no big deal. Wink

I meant plugging in a HD in place of the DVD

Here is a prototype of a box I want made out of Aluminum, 9x8x3. I thought I would do it in plexi first to make sure my measurements were all correct. Anyone know a cheap place to get it made?

The 4 sides & top basically sit on the bottom peice, havent got to screws yet. The mobo will be in the usual spot with the PS upside down to the left as well. I want to only have the power (eject) button & the controller ports on each side. I was hoping to just use 2 laptop drives, but I guess I will have to cram a DVD drive in there too

I need to figure out where to get the air intake from, but any suggestions are welcome!

in EVTool uncheck the DVD check option when making your BIOS. The whole reason that option is there is so people can either boot without the DVD player or with 2 HDDs. So 2 HDDs Should Work, however dont even start to ask me what the partitions should look like or what the Max size would be.

As for after market DVD-Roms working. As far as I know only one works now, and the after-look isnt very pretty.

What type of drive is that? many Disks use a 44-pin EIDE but your is alittle diffrent.
