I am just wondering what are the chances of killing/burning my motherboard of my xbox v1.6 while rebuilding the LPC. I have one wire already soldered, but I find it very difficult soldering the other wires to the small solder points i need to solder to. I am sending my xbox over to a friend who can finish the job because I do not want to risk it if I havent already destroyed my motherboard.
Please Note i am a n00b when it comes to installing mod chips. _________________ This is my signature.

Chances are really good if you don't know how to solder to good. The SmartXX PCB Rebuild board for the 1.6 works for the Xenium and is alot easier and quicker to install.

Three pieces of advice for any noob wanting to solder a 1.6 and who isn't sure of what they are doing.
Do NOT use the X3 chip
Use a Xenium Ice or SmartXX V2 and by all means use the LPC Rebuild PCB
If you are still not sure, pay someone to do it for you. I just talked to someone down in Georgia that tried a 1.6 for a buddy. First machine, he nuked the mobo. Bought another one in hopes that he could get it done and his buddy wouldn't know. Nuked that one. Bought another, again desperate to not let his buddy know he nuked his machine. Nuked that one too.
I just took in on trade three nuked machines for a modded Xbox. I'd have to say the biggest mistake people make when modding the 1.6 is not picking a good chip for their experience. I think you'll be okay with the Xenium Ice, I really do. Or the SmartXX for that matter. Less pins for one thing. Second, the rebuild PCB that SmartXX makes is awesome.
Also, use a 25watt iron. I know I know, they say use a 15watt, but here is what I dont like about the 15watt. When you use that, you have to let the iron on the pin for a longer period of time. Othewise, the solder does not spread out enough. It tends to flow toward the hot tip of the iron more than it will flow away. I am sure others here have seen exactly what I am talking about. What then happens is you end up getting uneven solder application and gaps. Sometimes gaps you don't even see.
But, with a 25watt iron it's totally different. Just touch the pin for a short period of time and lay th solder down and you'll see it quickly spread out all over the pin and the LPC hole making a solid joint!! Also, don't use real thick (diameter) solder. I use .022. This will allow you to control the flow a lot better.
Let me know if you need anymore help. Welcome to the site and to the modding arena! You will love your modded machine. Not to discourage you, but chipping the machine in my opinion is the easy part. Configuring the software is teh bitch...lol. Use an installer....trust me.

I'ld say buy the SP adapter so it becomes a solderless job, with no LPC rebuild and very little chance of screwing the Mobo.

My first mod was on a 1.6 and I was a little intimidated because I bought the box and opened it up before even playing one game....It would kind of suck to buy a box and screw it up before even turning it on but anyways....I got an old external 33.3 modem, cracked it open, and started practicing my soldering on the smallest chips I could find in it( i was originally practicing for a ps2 install)....after i was confident with that i tried it on my box and it seemed to go pretty smoooth....my method is a bit different than all of you guys though...i have yet to touch my iron to the pin before heating up the solder to bind to it....instead i put a small amount of flux around the pin and put a small amount of solder on the tip of my iron then quite quickly tap the pin causing the solder to flow over the pin and bind everything....maybe this method is completely wrong and i have been getting lucky in my installs but it is what i found to work for me and am just passing on the info....btw, on my 1.6 i even soldered to a wrong hole but used my desoldering braid and it still worked....after that i was pretty convinced it takes some screwing with your board to mess it up....i am just paranoid about holding my iron to my board for awhile thats why i just tap it and let the flux do the work.....you should have seen me on a 1.0 install, i was so paranoid using the braid to suck the stuff out of the lpc holes...i thought for sure i burnt the board, it was smoking and everything but nevertheless it worked so i dont know....later _________________ Xbox V1.6
