First timer, here, trying to softmod my son's xbox for Xebian

The stats:
v1.4 xbox (I'm pretty sure)
mfd. 2003-08-22
dashboard 1.00.4920.01

We used OXmemory on a SanDisk Cruiser memory stick to install the emergency linux and it appears to work. The screen goes funky when we run the linux, but I'm told that's normal. I can telnet in and it looks like linux to me.

Now we want to install a full distro. I'm using Xebian 1.1.0 Expanded the .iso file onto the disk and it appears fine when I look at it on the PC. When we load it into the xbox while at the dashboard, the 21 Service Required Call Customer Support error message comes up.

Anyone got an idea what the problem is? Could it be the disc medium? Or is it more likely in the emergency linux load or a real live hardware problem?
