First thing you should when you open up a slim line ps2 is to perform the LA fix to stop the laser from burning out. LA is the chip which drives the laser. An example is the V9 LA drives the laser at an incorrect and unstable voltage. The romeo fix supplies the cct with the correct stable 5v supply.

Say for example the laser is 20watts

Power = Volts * Amps therfore Amps = power/watts

20Watts = 5Volts * 4 amps being drwn by coils in laser assembly

Run the laser at a reduced voltage and look what happens

20Watts / 3.3Volts = 6 Amps being drawn by laser coils

My suspiscion is maybe this is a deliberate attempt to reduce the life of the console. I can't see any reason why a manufacturer would deliberately design a component to burn out.

My thaughts are similar with the fans speed in our favourite console.

Do console makers design a console then look at ways to make only last a certain amount of time - perhaps just past the warrenty period for heavy users.

nah, it wasn't an LA prob cos the coils were both good, it was the laser itself but they have release replacments for it now
