i was gonna order a xenium ice chip and a maxtor 160gb drive...
BACKGROUND:
i have a 1.0 xbox...
i never go on Xbox Live...
want to rip games directly to the hd...
im definately nervous about soldering for the first time, but i think i can handle it...
i dont really trust mailing my xbox to someone i dont know to mod it for me...
ive seen 100's of pages on mod walkthrus and am also intimidated by how much work it looks like ill have to figure out and do.
with a 1.0 box, does x-ice and a maxtor sound like what ill need?

if this is a good choice, where is the best place to order the chip from (US)?
do i need any extra parts to instal a HD and chip myself?
bmmods offers a solder kit (3.99) and a hd upgrade kit (4.99)
i have a soldering iron, so im assuming i dont need that kit, but what is in a hd upgrade kit? worth getting?

Hey bud, if you are not comfortable with soldering...DONT. I have had three members ship their machines to me this month who tried soldering and have nuked their boards. Only one was repairable, two had to buy new motherboards.
The Xenium Ice modchip is AWESOME. The X3 is very nice, but more soldering...plus the bios' are still a little buggy. So, I would avoid that chip for a few more months. It's strong though.
The Xenium Ice modchip will do everything you want and more. It's one of the easier chips to install when it comes to soldering. You only need to solder the pin header and D0.
I know it's hard to trust people that you don't know, but go to this post and read my references. I do tons of machines for member here, xbox-scene, and other forums not too mention my own modding site www.themodgod.com
If you send me your chip, xbox, and HD, I will install the chip. Flash it. Install the HD, format it, prepare it, and load it up with everything imaginable. Applications, emulators, over 10,000 roms, some DivX movies if you want, and a few surprises. For the month of November, you can get your chip installed for $20.00 , HD installed and formatted $20.00, 1.6 versions require an extra $15.00 for LPC rebuild, but I think you said you have a 1.0/1.1 if I remember correctly.

Either way, you should be fine. You do not need the HD upgrade kit. The solder kit you should get. It has the right thickness solder, some braid, and 30AWG wire in case you melt the D0 loom it comes with.
