I finally bought my XBox a few days ago and I am looking at putting in a modchip. I want to upgrade the HD and use the XBox to stream DivX and other movie files from my PC to my TV. I still want to be able to play games on it and I still want to be able to access Live with it. Is this all possiblle?
I also noticed that the XBox can't output DVD movies in a progressive mode, does a modchip make that possible?
I know my box is a 1.6 version so what modchips are going to be best for it? I was looking at Xenium ICE, SmartXX or the Xecuter 3 but I can't see what the real differences between them are.
I know that you can't play backed up games over Live but do they work over XBConnect?

no clue but u might like to know that if u mod your 1.6 mobo u may fry one of the resistors the damn thins are so touchy anyway its not the chip its the board if u loose power search the forums for info on what risistor to replace

Well, before you worry about frying anything, let's get some more details.
Since it's a 1.6 (happen to know if it's a 1.6 or 1.6b?), you're going to have to do some soldering. If that freaks you out, but you still want it done, I recommend sending it to one of the pros on this site. They're definitely reliable, and relatively affordable. TheModGod can handle your modding needs in the US, and CustomMods (I think I got his name right) will take care of you in the UK. Forahobby himself might be willing to help you if you're an Aussie customer.
Anyway, I have a Xenium ICE at the moment, and it's a fine chip. Easy to flash, plenty of space for multiple BIOSes, and comes with a few cool extras like an easy to attach LED for external or internal use, and a USB port attachment that you just plug right into the controller port.
I'll be getting my Xecuter3 soon (still rubbing it in :p ), and that's what's going in my system for good. It's definitely a more powerful chip, but there's a lot more work involved with getting it put in and managing it. If you plan on adding things like LCDs or other hardware addons, I would highly recommend the X3.
In the end, though, it all comes down to what BIOS you end up using. Both chips can support the newer BIOSes (though Xecuter's X3-1959 has features only the X3 can use), so neither is really a bad choice.
Whichever one you choose, get it from someone on this forum, or from a confirmed reseller listed on the chip's site.

Everything you want to do sound okay, but the Xbox Live may create issues. Right now the modded xbox on XBL is in a severe state of flux.
For what you want to do, if you had a Media Center PC running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 you would be better off buying the Microsoft Media Center Extender Kit.
It will let you stream anything from your PC to your Xbox and will not effect your XBL.
It will even give you TiVO functions with your xbox. Pause, rewind, and FF Live TV, also recording features.
