My problem is that the magnet on the spindle is sticking to the top of the DVD drive, causing the tray to not open.
Tried doing stuff to the rubber band but it hasn't worked.
Lubricating moving parts of the drive doesn't help.
The only solution I see is to stop the magnet being so powerful (I'm sure the electromagnet in the spindle has magnetised the bit of metal above it).
But I don't want to make the spindle useless (so it doesn't spin the CD).
Has anybody done this before? _________________

My V1.0 Xbox does the same exact thing. The only way I've been able to open the tray for the last few years is to smack the top of the Xbox above where the drive is when I press the eject button. Doing this a few times usually opens the drive, but there has got to be a better way.
If you find anything out about this I'd love to hear it because I need to fix mine as well. _________________

OK, I'll try to weaken the magnet in the next few days.
I noticed that if I remove the metal case, the drive will open every time but the tray gets stuck at the end :/ The metal case solves one problem and creates another.
A while back I did a bit of service on the rubber band but after a while the spindle got stronger and holds the tray in even if the lid is much higher than the drive. _________________

I'm making progress.
I quickly found out how to make it weaker. It said dropping the magnet or heating it. I figured that dropping it would be too slow and also weaken the motor magnet (baaaaad).
So what I've been doing is sticking the spindle part to the metal part of a cooker hob, then boiling water so only the bit of metal on top gets very hot. The plastic is nothing to worry about, it doesn't melt. It is taking a while though... slowly getting there. Last test in action showed the tray was opened with a light slap (not a punch like before), but it still stuck. Currently reheating the hobs. Here is a picture to demonstrate my method.

Given up on the heating method. I found that it making little to no difference, even stuck to a 2kW heater.
I stuck some tape on the upper part of the spindle mechanism (the bit on the top of the drive) to sperate the parts a bit. It worked but I get scraping noises when there is no CD in, which isn't a problem. _________________

I was fiddling with a Samsung yesterday regarding this. I ended up using those little plastic rings you use in (old school paper ) files to prevent the paper from tearing around the holes.
The inside diameter is perfect, you just need to trim the outside. I ended up needing 6 before it stopped sticking. However I put them on the spindle, not the upper part.

I think it would be better to put them on the top part but if it works for you then it is fine.
Glad to help. _________________

Hey got some news on this.
I was trying again by sticking the spindle part to a hot plate. It didn't seem to be working when suddenly the little metal ring fell out of the spindle. I then stuck that in a pan of boiling water for a while and then came back to find all the water gone and the magnet very very weak.
This is a problem, but the tray never gets stuck anymore!
Now it is weird because it lets a spinning disc down and scrape on the tray. Not sure if this is because I broke something or just that the magnet had something to do with slowing the disc down. _________________

might be the top plastic guide spinning more freely not the disc itself, the mechanism that lets the disc down doesnt go down until the tray starts to slide, letting the disc go. are there scratches on any discs?

The discs are fine. It seems they are just spinning on the rim of the discs.
The top part definitely isn't being held down as tightly. I know this because when you start it up, you can hear it bouncing off of the spindle. _________________

Why waste your time removing the magnet, just use a old music cd. when you have finished playing the game take out the game disc and put the old music cd in.
