Good Evening & Thanks in advance for any help.

So, I have a relatively long and convoluted tale of SoftModding my XBox to get to XMBC - bear with me because I am a noob when it comes to the terminology of XBox modding...

I have a stock XBox with Thompson DVD, stock HDD, running the latest 5960 Dashboard and it has never connected to Live. I am using the MechAssault exploit with the SID 5.1 USB installer (from the XBMCID 1.2 download). I hacked a USB cable to use AR to load the savegames into memory from the stick to the HD.

Yesterday I was able to run the SID USB the first time and was able to succesfully complete the XBMC install with a single boot for HD. I backed up my C: and the MS Dash. XMBC loaded, connected to the network, etc... It looked great, but it wasn't the newest Confluence theme - which of course I had to have...

I decided that I wanted to upgrade to a newer version of XMBC so I booted into the XBMCID disc I burnt and tried loading the one touch single boot for softmod and all looked like it went fine, but when I restarted I only got the blank screen but with the orange ring. Weird... So I tried again, nothing. So knowing I am a noob and probably screwed things up during the "upgrade" I restored the MS Dash and restored the C: from the backup.

I rebooted and all appeared normal, games loaded, MSDash loaded normally, green rings and all was good.

So, I re-did the SID5.1 without doing the XBMC dash and then rebooted from the XBMCID DVD and tried to again install the latest XMBC Dash and associated skins. This time instead of getting the XBMC splash I got the XBMCID splash and a blank screen (without the disk in). So I tried to install the softmod again, and installing the XBMC Dashboard again - nothing - still booting the XMBCID splash with a blank screen and not XBMC.

So I tried undoing it again following what I thought to be the same process I did yesterday of restoring C and the Dashboard from the back-ups. I rebooted and the MS Dash came up and I was able to reload the savegames and booted into MechAssault. I selected the "Run Linux" save game and the XBox restarted with the orange ring, but this time MechAssault loaded again but with the orange ring - no SID...

Huh? I tried booting from the XMBCID disk - nothing - the XBox couldn't read it now as if the SID wasn't installed - but the ring was orange in MechAssault? So I tried again, and again, and again... Nothing.

I tried inserting the Halo 2 disk to "upgrade" the Dash in case it had some bum files - nothing appeared out of ordinary and the game loaded and played fine. I tried the Mech Assault again a number of times all with the same results - "Run Linux" appears with the right options, the XBox resets with the orange ring and the game starts up again.

My final piece of testing was to try and connect to Live to force it to reload the MS Dash (I've read it's a "fix" for a few corrupt file issues) and this is when I received the error 21.

I am looking for any advice that can quickly get me up and going again because I am not experienced enough to figure it out on my own...

I am willing to do a hard drive swap as I have a few various sized hard drives floating around from old PC Upgrades - 80GB, 160GB, 250 and maybe even a 500GB - maybe now is the right time, but I think I want to get back to a working "factory" system first if possible.

Good Morning All - while this may be related I have another clue that my stock MSDash is messed up.

I tried going into the Network settings of the dash to see what the IP is and I got the error 21 with flashing red/green ring.

I still can't figure out why I am not able to re-run the softmod...

Since necessity is the mother of invention I banged away on my Xbox yesterday and got it back to a semi-known state.

I used the Knave 6.6.6 exploit for Mech Assault to "Run Linux" and replace the Dash. After several tries and a few restarts I was able to undo the SoftMod and get back to "factory fresh".

Now I just have to figure out how to get from SID 5.1 USB w/ XBMC 9.04 to XBMCID 1.2 w/ XBMC 9.11 and Confluence....

I am going on vacation tomorrow and won't be working on it for a week, but hopefully some easy advice will be forthcoming in my absence.
