Okay, Hi I'm fairly new to xbox modding, tried this very same thing about last year and failed miserably, so I'm back trying to fix this problem again. I have tried to hot-swap according to several tutorials and to no avail, the basic procedure is,
-Have xbox HDD power'd by computer to avoid floating ground.
-Power computer on (both pause at bios and boot into XBHDM)
-hotswap xbox HDD (at error screen, while playing a song, before white microsoft while white microsoft)
-Boot option (1 or 2)
-Have the bootup throw a screen of HDD reading errors,
-Try xbrowser, get a no xbox partition table found error.
I have tried this numerous times getting my hotswap technique down to swapping in about 2 seconds. I don't understand this.
Searched far and wide across the internet and read numerous tutorials following them to the T.
I have a Xbox 1.5
seagate xbox HDD(stock)
Samsung DVD drive
Kernel:5101
Dash:5960
I would appreciate being able to softmod my xbox this way as the games are not readily available for a save-game hack.
Thanks to everyone who has read this and please give me some ideas/help
My first thought was that it was a 1.5 but I hear that 1.6 can also be hot-swapped so I doubt that.
please people!

I personally tried doing a hotswap once and had nothing but problems with it, so I really can't help you other than by saying its much much easier just to track down a copy of splinter cell from a gamestop somewhere or ebay.

@quads
thanks for the reply, was thinking this place was dead on account of the xbox360 being around. I know how you feel, I'm jealous of the people who get it first try
anyway I heard that my specific seagate st310014ace can be unlocked with a certain "master password" no idea what it is, but I'll look into it, if you have any idea let me know, I'm always looking for the workaround (can't rent the games so the only alt. is to buy the games at $15)

EEPROM reader wouldn't help at all, since this has nothing to do with the EEPROM.
The only way your going to be able to it softmodded is:
1. Go out and buy a game that works with the softmod like mechassult (this is the game I use)
2. Get the hotswap to work (I have never done a softmod install with a hotswap, so I can't help there)
Those are about your only options in getting it softmodded. _________________

Doesn't the EEPROM hold the HDD's password? atleast, thats what i've been lead to believe.

Well the EEPROM does hold the hard drive password, but why would you need that? Do you want to unlock the hard drive, softmod it, then relock it? At that point you might as well just get a $5 used copy of splinter cell off ebay. _________________

Without a doubt the best and safest way to gain access to your hardrive via hotswap method is by removing the ide cable from the DVD drive. On boot up you'll get an error code (not sure of number). Congrats your HDD is unlocked and ready for a hotswap. The best guide that I have found that works is found here http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263. If you follow this one to the T you should have no problems. I've used this method on a v1.0 and 1.6a xbox so I know it works.
If you have any questions or problems just pm me, I will gladly help you out with the process. Just don't expect immediate responses.

been there done that, failed after about 50 tries, I hear its the most reliable but, yeahh.
also at dartht33bagger,
have a look at this, http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/747857
very simple guide, I'm not too new to the world of electronics ect.
I do understand it is a fair bit more trouble, but that's what modding's about isn't it? besides, this way I can control everything from my computer, which is what I had always wanted.
BTW my computer has a prompt at bootup to unlock the HDD in BIOS so it cant be too much trouble for me

After you tried my method and tried to reboot the machine I'm assuming you had an 21? DId you ever gain access to the hdd I'm also assuming that you downloaded the updated Ndure script as par instructions. I can tell you that both of the Xbox's that I modded after I backed C drive up threw me into error 21. I just had to re-hook the hdd to the computer boot xbhdm then go to ndure then replace C drive. After that whenever you turn it on, you'll notice that your box is softmodded if the led light turns orange. I had to put in a dvd movie as a dash loader "boot disk" to get the machine to boot Unleash X.

Your HDD would have to unlock at some point or your xbox would give you an error code. You must be switching the cables too early. _________________

The times I have switched the cables have varied, I have even attempted the audio playback, where, in order to play music the HDD would HAVE to be unlocked, so I don't believe that's the issue. It's got my brain in a knot but hey, that's the fun of it.

Well it seems that your only options now are an EEPROM reader or just go out and buy the game. The game would cost just about as much as the EEPROM reader and it would be 10 times easier, but you can go whatever way you want. _________________

Sorry about the misunderstanding, I had originally read your post at 3 or four in the morning so I was a little tired. So I missed out on some of the "little" things like the TITLE! Already slapped myself on the forehead. Anyway sorry about that.
This is a long shot, but did you put the hdd on the primary ide cable in master position? Did you change the pin settings to master instead of CS? I know that you followed the tut's to the T I was just wondering if that might be something that you overlooked. I hear that Xboxhdm has some incompatibilities with certain machines. That might also be your problems have you tried to do this on another machine?
