This is my first experience with modding the XBOX, but I am comfortable with electronics and computers. So far everything has gone okay, but now I need to undo some things and want to make sure that I don’t screw it up. First some background. Sorry for the length, but details might be important here.
I originally installed the softmod using SID 4.0 with dual boot MS-Dash and UnleashX. Made the eeprom.bin and MS-Dash backups as part of the install (via Evox). FTPed these over to a PC. After this whenever I booted to the mod the front LED was RED - normal. I then used AID 4.40 to install one-click dual boot with XBMC as the dash, but whenever I rebooted after finishing, it still booted to the UleashX dash. Note than I unmounted the virtual C drive prior to each of these one-click attempts. It seems now that I have the SID 5.01 install because whenever I booted to the mod the LED was YELLOW. Is this true? I tried this about three times, and each time, it still rebooted to UnleashX.
So then I decided that it was more important for me to have XBMC as my default dash rather than retaining the Xbox-Live functionality as my primary use for this is XBMC. As such, I then unmounted the Virtual C and performed a one-click Virtual C + EEPROM install to single boot to XBMC. All was well until after playing with XBMC, I come to find out that the high resolution (480p 720p and 1080i) settings can not be enabled from within XBMC unless they were turned on the in MS-Dash. So my question is what is the best way to proceed from here to enable these setting without screwing up something leading to a error 21? I can think of some options, but which is best?
1. Reinstall the softmod with AID 4.40 via the “install softmod” option using the single boot Virtual C + EEPROM option with HD. After doing this will the HD settings be enabled. Do I have to unmount the virtual C drive first here as well?
2. Perform another one-click dual-boot install with XBMC as my dash. Then boot to the MS-Dash, enable the settings, and boot back to XBMC.
3. Uninstall the softmod completely via AID 4.4 make the changes in the restored MS-Dash and reinstall the softmod. Is an unmount of the virtual C required here before the unistall?
The bottom line is that I need to return to the MS-Dash to enable the settings, I just want to do it correct way, given that I am coming from a Virtual C + EEPROM mod. Thank you for any help.

The MS dash wont effect your screen settings, you need an MS HD A/V kit to use the options your talking about.
I run the HD settings on mine and have completely removed the MS dash altogether.

Cool. So if I understand this right when I get the HDTV AV pack and plug it in, XBMC will sense this and enable the HD settings? I was holding off getting the cable until I was sure the mod went okay.
On another note I am still a little off base on just what I can and cannot do since I installed the Virtual C + EEPROM softmod. Like if I want to install a new version of XBMC, can I just FTP in and overwrite the files on E:\XBMC? Or, if I wanted to use AID to change my dash in the future would I use the Softmod option or the modchip option of the dash. I know the manual eludes to using the modchip option, but it is still something I'm not 100% sure of. I guess what I am searching for is some guidance on what I can and cannot modify, overwrite etc since I have a Virtual C + EEPROM mod. Like if the E: drive is free reign, or is there some things I shouldn't mess with that will screw up XBMC so it will no longer boot. Thanks if you can provide some insight or point me in the right direction.

They must still be enabled in the MS Dash. Under video, enable all 3 res settings. Then you can set Dash/Emulators. You can use any brand component cable. Looks great!

That's what I initally thought, but for some reason I did not have to go back to the MS Dash to enable the settings in XBMC to get HD. However, it did take alot of messing around to get everything to work. I will outline my experience so that it may save others time in the future.
First I did the obvious:
settings-->system-->video hardware - changed aspect to wide screen and enabled 480p and 720p.
But I found that the Dash didn't look any better and my TV indicated that it was still getting a 480i signal. After some searching I found:
settings-->appearance-->screen - Changed resolution to 720p 16:9
Now the Dash was displaying at 720p, but whenenver I played any videos or DVDs my TV still indicated a 480i signal. Lastly, I found the following:
settings-->video-->player - changed resolution to 720p 16:9.
Now everything is coming at 720p and all seems well.
Still not sure why I didn't have to enable the settings in the MS-Dash first before any of this worked in XBMC. Perhaps newer versions of XBMC don't need this. I got my XBOX used from Gamestop. Perhaps when they bring them back to stock they already enable the HD settings? Anyone have any other ideas?

My resolution changes immediately when when changing the setting in the MS Dash. The screen widens and the navigator gets smaller but cleaner. I just checked and even a stock xbox does this? HMMMMM? Maybe the Brand name or frozen cables makes a difference. I am using a third party component video cord for this situation and that might be the difference. None of the HD settings are changable in the unleashx dash and xbmc only changes from 4:3 to 16:9. Then I change the MSdash and bam, it all there. I do not think there will be just one answer for this question!
