Hey hopefully someone can help because im tearing my hair out over this damn xbox. of course this is the first xbox i'm trying to mod.... i have a v1.4 xbox (i think i'm pretty sure) i started off by opening it up and hard wiring in a usb hub and while i was in there i figured i would solder the 2 points together in order to tsop flash later once the softmod was in... anyway did that and then procided to try softmods, i'm using mechassault (its the right disk i checked the numbers) first i tried the mechinstaller from the xbox-linux project site with no sucess and thats when i learned about dashboard versions, at that time it was 5659. my next attempt was with SID v5.0 but first i upgraded to 5960 using a copy of halo 2... now every piece of documentation i can find says that SID v5 will work on a 1.4 xbox with 5960 dash. yet all that happens is that the light turns orange and the screen goes black.... i know what the troubleshooter says warning against using old versions of softmods but seriously this was a fresh retail piece of equipment and i doubt the mechinstaller had any lasting effects since it didnt work
please someone tell me where the hell i went wrong and more importantly how the hell i can fix it.... thank you

So when you start the mechassult savegame for sid 5.0 the screen turns black and just sits there? _________________

Welcome to the HQ cruz, we hope you enjoy the site.
The sid exploit might have been corupted when you put it on the flash drive or from the flash drive to the xbox hdd.
If it wont reboot to anything but a black screen you might need to use xboxhdm to fix it.

Sounds like the xbox works fine up until he loads the savegame. I think he may have a messed up installer file. _________________

Yea thats right, orange button and black screen... it would stay that way for hours if i let it.
i think i;m going to start researching that xboxhdm and whats involved with that but dont i need origional copies of all those .xbe files???

oh and btw idk how i could have messed up the installer file, i downloaded it and dumped it right onto the memory card via action replay, i think i even went back and put a fresh copy on later so idk

wait i read that wrong.... it does only go black when i try to load the savegame, the system works fine other than that except maybe that it has alot of trouble reading disks sometimes

Sid5 wont work on some memm cards and some flashdrives so if you have an OG MS memm card or some other flash drive i wold give them a try.

i was trying an original xbox memory card... i spliced a controller onto a usb cable and installed the xbox drivers

Did you leave the gamesave file and the installer file in .rar format? If you don't do that it will mess up. _________________

Cruz I had the same problem, I made a usb controller from an old xbox controller and loaded the correct drivers, every thing looked great. I used spintercell and the expoilts showed the correct size but they would not complete the softmod, I finally FTP the game saves to My chipped box then loaded them on an Original xbox memcard and they worked just fine. try that if you can.

That might work only problem is do not have a modded xbox already nor do i have access to one... i've already burned a copy of xboxhdm to a boot disc and i think i'm going to try hotswapping... now idk because every tutorial i find on hotswapping is poorly written and i get the feeling that i wont really get it down until i destroy a few hard drives. but i'll continue to do research before i really attempt it. but am i right to assume that hotswapping completely circumvents the softmodding process?
