Don't need a mod chip but i like it because its easier to do stuff with over softmodding. Anyways here's some tuts for making a new HDD for softmodded xboxes.

I have recently got an Xbox in order to do exactly what you plan to do, softmodding took no time at all and went with no hitches, as did using AID 4 to install the few apps I wanted, including XBMC.
Just today I put in a new 250GB HDD following the Chimp tutorial from FinalClouds sig'.
It was a piece of cake, although something I haven't seen mentioned came up:
I had it all in place but I couldn't get Chimp working, it would not respond to any button presses, after a bit of trial and error I found that although UnleashX and XBMC worked fine, my third party pad was not picked up by Chimp, plugging in an official Xbox pad worked fine though???
It actually took a lot less time than I expected, I am now filling my harddrive with stuff, thanks to everyone on this forum for making it all so easy.

Glad we could help man, I'll add a note into the Chimp tutorial mentioning the probs you had with your third prty pad, so that others are aware too.
