My Phillips crapped out so I bought a Hitachi-LG DVD to replace it. The ebay vendor touted it as better than Phillips, Thomson, Samsung ...blah blah.
Here's my observations:
So far, it's read all my DVD+R backups, only at boot up.
It doesn't read any CD-R backups.
It's read the two Memorex CD-RW's I've tried, only at boot up.
It doesn't seem to be compatible with the utility DVD2XBOX.
I haven't been able to launch an original or backup disc from EVOX dashboard.
If anyone else has purchased this drive and has had different results, please comment _________________ Not quite a Newbie

well, your kinda stuck with what you got, as its not tweakable, I would have stuck with a thompson or phillips, they are both tweakable and they read the most media. _________________

Was this the premodded version or did you buy the drive and adapter? If you did the later, you need to update the firmware on the drive.
Here is the adapters website:
http://www.xbox8164adapter.com/download.html
It runs originals and DVD backups like a champ. My real issues are the incompatibility with DVD2XBOX and the inability to launch an original or a backup from EVOX.
When I run DVD2XBOX to back up an original it reports no disc in the drive.
When I try to launch an original from EVOX, nothing happens.
BTW the drive is identified as a GDR-8050L not an 8164. Any other suggestions? _________________ Not quite a Newbie
Thanks tazzman for the link to the Phillips drive.
Anyone out there with a softmodded 1.6 box and a Hitachi-LG? Are you experiencing the same issues? Are there any other solutions? _________________ Not quite a Newbie
No, I didn't mod the drive. I bought it new on ebay. I understand it's the same drive that M$ has been putting in some of their 1.6 boxes.
That's what's got me so befuddled. I can't be the only one who's encountered this issue. And, I know know there's a logical technical answer but I haven't found it yet. _________________ Not quite a Newbie

I haven't heard about them puttin them in 1.6's but i just got one for christmas and just flashed the new firmware, I need to get a better iron to do the adapter. but ill post if i have any problems with my V1.4
I'm starting to believe that the Hitachi-LG 8050 L drive was designed to frustrate modders. Because if my box was stock it would be a perfectly suitable replacement drive.
Any comments? _________________ Not quite a Newbie
I'm sorry stud_man50, I don't know what "capadable" means.
BTW, I put the Hitachi-LG 8050L DVD drive in my grandson's chip modded Xbox and the results were the same as mine.
It reads DVD+R backups, only at boot up.
It doesn't read any CD-R backups.
It's read the two Memorex CD-RW's I've tried, only at boot up.
It not compatible with the utility DVD2XBOX.
I can't launch an original or backup disc from EVOX dashboard. _________________ Not quite a Newbie

that drive is a standard xbox drive that was being put into the Xbox v1.6/v1.6b xboxes since end september 2004. Now as to why it dont want to work, it could be anything, it might work normally in a 1.6, but I have seen in other forums outside of hq where they were having pretty much the same issues. _________________
