well if you have a version 1.0-1.5, i would recomend a applex v. if it's a 1.6, i would say either a duox 2 or a applex vi pro, they're all good chips and run under $28.
as far as the back up question, yeah. just burn them to a dvd. but the xbox must be modded

The chip isn't actually what enables you to play the backups. It's the bios that you flash upon the chip. I'd recommend you checking out some of the newbie stickys that the admins/mods have put up to help answer the question you have just asked, and to give you some insight on modding.

You really need to assess what it is you want out of your mod, and understand that if you are only wanting to play backups, then you are probably selling youself a little short on what your mod is capable of!

There's so much more to modding than piracy!! Trust me. From emulation, web surfing, streaming video, region free DVD playing, Xbox Media Center, and so on there is so much your machine will be able to do once you have that chip installed and flashed with a capable bios.

Also, keep in mind that different chips will have different benefits. I typically use the Xenium chips due to a few reasons. I like the support that I can find on the chip. I can't tell you how many X Chip modders have come to this site lately asking questions and I am having a hell of a time finding good resources and support for that chip. Now, I'm not knocking the chip as it will do just about everything that the Xenium will do except the way you can flash it and maybe a few other bells and whistles.

Another thing I like about the Xenium chip is the fact you can flash it via the DVD drive on your xbox. No hooking up cables, and no issues if you want to reflash down the road. Others don't mind doing that, and that's great. But, you have to take all into consideration according to your tastes.

You will also want to take into consideration if you want to game on xbox live or not. You will also need to take into consideration what version xbox you have. That is a huge factor. Do you want to solder, do you not want to solder? All this factors in to what chip is right for you.

The Xecuter chips are also very popluar however the X2.3's are no longer in production as they are getting ready to distribute the X3 chips. So, you may want to think about that too.

I have seen chips ranging from 24.95 to 60.00. They all have the pluses and minuses. Don't chip your machine for what you think it can do today, chip your machine for what it can do today, and what you may want to do tomorrow!

After you read some sticky's and posts formulate any questions you may have and post away. We will make sure that we help you in anyway we can.

Welcome to the site and good luck with your upcoming mod! And, get that HD as soon as possible. It really extends your mod!

later man Cool

The Xenium Ice is an awesome chip. Lot's of nice features. Can you tell I'm partial to Xenium..HA.

What you will be able to do is chip your machine, and then use an autoinstaller to format your "retail" drive.

Then you can install your new Dashboard and Apps.

You can use an app to rip a game (you should have enough space to rip one or two depending on the size) and then FTP it over to your PC. Once at your PC you can use a program like C Xbox Tool 2 to convert it into a burnable game, then just burn it right on your DVD Drive. You will need a DVD Drive on your PC as 98% of xbox games are over 1GB.

That should give you some backup options at least until you can put a HD in. Once you put a HD in you will have enough space to enjoy emulators and other fine xbox modding activities.

later man

yeah, you can still do a shit load with a stock hdd man. but i garaunte, eventualy you'll want a larger hdd so you can store games on it. you can put them on dvds but in the long run... whats cheaper, dvds or a hdd??? i know i bought a pack of 5 dvdrw's at wall mart for $12 about 3 months ago. i paid $79.99 for a 160gb hdd (bought it yesterday). i would say on average, a game will be between 1gb-5gb depending on what game.
sooo you make the decision man. but i would say, get the larger hdd.
but for now, tinker around. you'll get addicted.
