Howdy, I've just got my XBox chipped and everything is sweet except that I can't get MAMEdOx 1.1 to work properly (and sum other emulators). It loads fine, then there's a help message and it says push any key to continue, so i do, the roms are then loaded up ok. I then choose a game, it loads but when its running i can't actually do anything with it. Its like the controller does not work or is not configured correctly. I hit "BACK" (for more credits) and no response. If I press START and BACK the game exits and brings me back to the rom-list. FYI - I have my controller plugged into port#3. For sum reason after I got the box chipped I can only use ports 3 & 4. Does MAME and other emulators ONLY allow ports 1 & 2 to be used? I'm starting to get bored of just watching the games rather than playing the damn things .....i need help!

Normally most programs on the xbox do look to ports 1&2, you said you got your box modded, it sounds like they might have accidently unplugged the first set of controller ports. I would contact them and see what can be done, if you feel safe enough you could open it up and look, it's not too difficult. Also are you using an official MS controller, or some third party such as a Mad Catz controller? I've heard of issues with non standard controllers so this could answer the question. _________________

Thanks for the information! Yes, the controller is a standard MS controller... I did some playing around last night and I think you are right about the connection- Ports 1&2 are definitely not working at all regardless of how I boot up. I'll probably pop it open and have a quick look, hopefully its just a matter of plugging back in a cable or something..
For now though, I have a work-around- It turns out that if I use an older version of MAMEox it will respond to the inhouse menu options (BACK + WHITE button). This allows me to adjust the game controls and I am able to reconfigure all the buttons to point to J3&4. Unfortunately I have to do this for every single game but that's cool, i'll adjust them as I play em'.
