**Skip to the end to see a point-by-point list of my questions minus the lengthy read**

I read a few of the testimonials, spent an hour or two searching for answers, went into a few gaming stores and asked as many people as I knew on MSN and in person who may have a clue, and so far, have come up with so many different varients of what to do and how to do it that I think my head might blow up.

First off, I want to say please don't chase me down with pitch forks or something because I'm a newbie and asking what may be a popular question.. I can't find the answer to what I need and it's getting awfully frustrating. I also understand how frustrating it is to see newbies asking questions without any information.. So I'll do my best.

I bought a version 1.7 XBox when I was in Australia about 6 months ago, along with a couple of the needed games at the time. When it came time to move back to Canada I figured it was worthless to sell my beloved XBox because the 360 just came out.. Anyways.

I figured, to play NTSC games I'd need to chip my xbox, which I'm happy with doing, and to plug it in here I may need to go as far as swapping in an American power supply in place of my Australian one, which again, I'm happy with doing. If it would make it all easier to as well swap the dvd drive I'd also go that far. All three would be a very popular question "why" by anyone when it'd end up being cheaper to buy the replacements to all my games and the original xbox after I'm done with it all.. But I'd also like to get into modding my XBox and I think those are all pretty standard mods.

I was told chipping wont do a thing because PAL and NTSC are different on a different level, it isn't so much the code of the dvd, or format of the laser whatever, it's got to do with how it all connects to the tv and how images and sounds are displayed. I was also following the thought process of the XBox is essentially a computer, and every computer I've lugged back and forth from Australia has always had a few minor problems that were fixed quite easily. The XBox I figured would be something fixed somewhat easily.. Beit chip/PSU swap or even something as simple as a cable exchange..

What I'm after is what do I have to do to run my Xbox here. Is it as simple as simply exchanging cables for Canadian ones, or do I need to do a power supply swap so it will run on the Canadian voltage.. ? I figure the AV Cables are the same in both countries, I don't see how there would be a tremendious difference in that, but I do see a slight problem with power management if the power supply in the Xbox can't switch between either current.. I figure it can because on the underside of the 'box it says 240v/110v or something similar, which is Aus/America voltage levels.

I don't care too much, yet, about playing NTSC games.. I can hold off on that if it is something as simple as a chip or dvd swap - I'm happy with my collection of games.. I just want to be able to play them here without too much hassle.

I'm going over to a friends to try a few things out with his xbox and mine, see if we can make things work and make mine work here. Fingers crossed it's simple, teeth clenching if it isn't.

Guaranteed this has been covered before, I searched for a while and didn't find anything relevent that directly answered my questions, so I figured I'd ask..

Just a brief recap for those who don't want to read what I wrote in full..

* To run a PAL v 1.07 Australian XBox in Canada.. --
- Do I need to use a new psu
- Do I need to chip my xbox
- Do I need to exchange AV and Power cables
- Do I need to run upgraded cabling
- Do I need to change my dvd drive
* To use NTSC games on a PAL Xbox.. --
- Pretty much the same 5 from above.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to anyone who lends any help =)

-K

well i dont believe there is a 1.7. I think you mean the 1.6 or the 1.6b. They are 2 diff. versions but there isn't a 1.7. And about your question, I really don't know about PAL so I can't help you there. sorry

What they call a "1.7" is actually what has been known to be called a 1.6C. The difference between the 1.6 or the 1.6b is that the motherboard is covered with some acrylic type stuff and the D0 holes that are required for a SOLDERLESS install are filled. To install a solderless chip you need to remove the coating with a fiberglass pen and then heat up a needle and actually drive holes through the D0 holes. I had to do it for my 1.6c box. If you're not going to do a solderless install (sorry, didn't read the whole post, just the part about the 1.7), then I wouldn't worry too much about the version, except for the bios version you'll need. You still need to make sure your bios is for a 1.6. Hope that gives a little insight into the issue.

Hi mate,

Youll be fine here.. The site is designed for newbies just like yourself to get help.. I believe the xbox version yo have is a V1.6c like T-Rizzle has explained..

You could i suppose call it a v1.7 but i believe its a 1.6c..

OK.

Its very simple to get your xbox working in canada..

1. Change out the power supply for your local area voltage.
eg. Australia is 240v and USA is 110v so more then likely you will need 110v being in canada..

2. You need to mod the unit either with a modchip or a softmod so you can boot and install the ENIGMAH VIDEO SWITCHER.. Modchip is the best option because it makes lots of things easy to do like upgrading to a larger hdd.. Softmodding there is a bit more to it.

3. Once your xbox is modded with a softmod or modchip it will play any region games.. You only need to USA ENIGMAH PAL/NTSC switcher for those games you are having issues with but most dashboard now support region switching.

3. You DO NOT need to change any other cables, or the xbox dvdrom drive.. It will work just fine how it is..

i only just recently did the same with a XBOX 360 console i imported to australia.. but everything was around the other way.. Im now waiting on a mod so i can play AUSTRALIAN GAMES and not just USA NTSC TITLES.

hope that helps you some

bye

For now I don't care too much about playing NTSC games, when I get a few more games I'll be more inclined to modchip the sucker, which i've wanted to do for a while now...

So to play my small collection of games here, my own, PAL games on my xbox, all I need to do is swap out the power supply for a local one and plug it in.. ? But if I want to play NTSC games I'll have to modchip/soft mod it and use this enigmah thing ? I think thats what I'm meant to understand...

Anyone have any suggestions on some reliable websites where I can buy a 120v psu for my xbox? I've found a few but I'm not sure what to trust and what to be weary of..

Thanks again!

ebay is a good website just make sure to get the compitable one for your xbox ver.

yea anything that isnt signed or aproved by ms is consider unsiged codes and it wont play until the security on the xbox is removed via softmod or chip

i recommend softmod ....

Actually, from what I understand, unless your televison is PAL compatible(Most North Amercian TV's aren't) if you try to play your PAL game on it you'll probably get a scrolling screen. This is why you would need to install a softmod/chip and use the Enigmah Pal/NTSC switcher.
Personally, I'm fond of the softmod as SID 4.5 and AID 3.0 make installation sooo easy.
You're best bet is to start by installing the right power supply and then research the mod method that suits you best.

Much like the 1.5, there is no 1.6c or 1.7. Here like many other sites they use the designation simply because it is easier than explaining to people that the certain motherboards were overdipped and lacquer filled the vias. A real version change requires a physicall change to hardware or the system itself. The fiberglass pen should clear enough away to give you a solid connection. All the holes are present and as T-rizzle suggested the fiberglass pen is the best route, although I would watch the heated pin.

Avalaunch and UnleashX both support auto region as do the Xenium, Xecuter, and Smartxx chips.

For the power supply I think you can also buy a power adapter you can plug in between the Xbox and your power. Is Canada 110 or 220?

Thanks guys ! That helps answer all the questions I had, though now I have a few more that I feel rather stupid for asking..

I remember looking through the booklets when I bought my xbox out of sheer boredom and noticed it said "v1.7" and remembering something about 1.7, because I didn't think they were up to .7 by the time I bought it (which was what.. 6 months ago?) Either way, beit 1.6 or 1.6b/c or .7 I don't really care too much, but I was looking on eBay and noticed that the style of the power supplies differ alot from v1.1 and 1.6 and just wanted to make sure I got the right one before I tore my box apart...

Given I have, as far as I know, the most recent xbox minus the 360, if I get a replacement power supply out of a 1.6 on ebay it'll fit, right?

As well as, getting it in looks like it's simply a case of either plugging it into whichever slot it's meant to fit (I havn't cracked open my box yet to see everything) or screwing it where it's meant to go, and connecting whats meant to be connected where it's meant to be connected.. Is that all there is to it, or do I need to grind and solder and risk doing some damage to my xbox ?

And finally, and I'm sure I'll get yelled at for this but I figure everyone has been so helpful already one more shouldn't hurt .. Where do I find this enigma thing you've all mentioned, I figure it's something you download and burn, and when the drive in the xbox reads it, it installs itself ? I'm sure there are instructions on how to use the software somewhere and as you've all said it was easy, it can't be that difficult...

I'll post my findings, and wait for someones approval before making the purchases I need to make - I'll post a link to an ebay bid and some "how to use such and such program.." and such .. Just so I can make sure the information I'm being fed is correct, as I'm sure the good people at xbox-hq wont steer me in the wrong direction !

Thanks everyone ! It's been a tremendious weight off my shoulders so far. Since going into EB and hearing this girl tell me PAL has to do with how the xbox connects to the TV and theres no way around it and modchipping and softmodding wouldn't do a thing, nor would power supply switching, I felt like I just carried a huge plastic paperweight across the world for no reason...

Phew.

Thanks Embarassed

Well and let's all thank Alladin and Smartxx for creating this wonderful marketing ploy to add to all the confusion. Unfortunately when a team jumps on the bandwagon with this kinda stuff it gives it credibility. Remember the "emergency" announcements of a new version, but they had figured out how to make their chips work. Mr. Green Rolling Eyes

Why not buy a aftermarket PSU for your xbox from lik-sang.. Thats what i would suggest. I wouldnt trust buying a Power Supply of ebay but thats just me.

I have purchase a few PSU's from lik-sang before and they work a treat..

heres a link:

Ok.. Everything you need is really in our VIP Downloads area.. Everything. But thats up to you whether you want to support our site and gain access to some files.

Apart from that you could try XBINS, Bit Torrent or many other resources..

Another tip:
AIDELUXE.COM - Auto Installer Deluxe can install 60+ Dashboards, Apps, Emulators and other homebrew software like the enigmah video selector.
You burn the AID onto a DVD-R or CDRW and boot in your modded xbox.. You then choose from the menu what you would like to install. Its the easiest way for all new guys.

l8r and enjoy our sites.
