Sorry but I couldnt thinnk of a better topic name lol
A friend of mine recently bought a modded xbox, but he doesnt know whether the box was modded with a chip or with a softmod...
Now there's the obvious way of telling by opening the case, but I was wondering if there is a way to tell WITHOUT opening the xbox...

Like sharky said, hard to tell.
Problem is, you forgot about a TSOP flash. A TSOP is the "Thin Small Outline Package" aka the XBOX onboard bios chip. That could be flashed with a hacked bios, and the whole xbox would act like a modchip.
Softmods might have the tray open menu or whatever nonsense (I refuse to softmod, lol).
The the modchip....shine a light in the left side of the hole. If you see a microchip board that is raised of the main mobo, its a chip...obviously. _________________ XBOX v1.6

how do you buy a modded Xbox and not know? seriesly, it would knock around $50 off the price if it doesn't have a chip. its the first question you should ask.

here's the simplest way
if your xbox bottom sticker are ripped or somehow you can see the screws..........it's either modded or tsop'd. if you want to specificly know, open and remove drives and see for your self.
if it shows it's never been opened, like you see the serial seal untouched, then it's softmodded.

not fool proof though, i've seen them look undamaged before. but if they are messed with, just open the thing and look
