HELLO ALL, THIS IS MY FIRST POST :
I do not know all the Xbox Modding lingo but here it goes anyway: I installed the Evox dash using the Mech Assult loader. Some how I can load the Microsft dash without problems on my crystal box. On my friends box I tried to patch it and got the screen of death, now his box continues to connect to live service all the time. Wont load games or dashboard.
I installed the mech game save, I backed up the msdash, installed the softmod then patched the ms dash and it says it failed to patch. Can you help me with this? I want to be able to go into the orginal ms dashboard after the softmod is in.
Thank you...

Firstly, Please do not make double posts!! I just deleted the same post in the VIP members section. You only need to start one new thread, not two.

Which softmod package are you using, you failed to say, but it sounds like you're using either a UXE or Nkpatcher setup if it's giving you the xbox live update thing.
The best way to ensure a softmod will work is by doing this:
1) Use my Softmod Installer Deluxe v2.0, tested on all different versions.
2) Make a backup of your C Drive by doing a MS Backup
3) Using the in-built file manager, delete ALL the files from C Drive. The reason we do this is because the softmod doesn't like old dashboards.
4) Install your softmod
5) Turn off your Xbox, and insert Auto-Installer Deluxe v1.01
6) Install the MS Dashboard from there, this is guarenteed to work with my softmod installer.
7) Go back and re-install your softmod, as installing the MS Dash previously wipes it
Now, use the Patch MS 5960 option.
You should have a perfectly softmodded xbox now.
Does that help?

sorry about the double post, I noticed after I posted that I should have placed my post in the Softmod section.
Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I will try your directions.

I modified his instructions to suit myself and this has worked on 3 different Xboxes so far today. Here it is:
The best way to ensure a softmod will work is by doing this:
1) Use my Softmod Installer Deluxe v2.0, tested on all different versions.
i used Mech assult.
2) Make a backup of your C Drive by doing a MS Backup
3) Using the in-built file manager, delete ALL the files from C Drive. The reason we do this is because the softmod doesn't like old dashboards.
4) Install your softmod and Evox dash or dash of your choice.
5) Turn off your Xbox, and insert Auto-Installer Deluxe v1.01
6) Install the MS Dashboard from there, this is guarenteed to work with my softmod installer.
7) Go back and re-install your softmod from the mod menu, as installing the MS Dash previously wipes it . Don't install dashboard yet.
Now, use the Patch MS 5960 option.
Do a mod backup.
9)install Evox dashboard or dashboard of choice.
You should have a perfectly softmodded xbox now.
IT works, thank you DJB !!!!

No worries.
The big thing about deleting the files off C Drive wasn't a bg issue I thiought, but after doing another softmod for a friend's Xbox with the new SID 3.0 I realised it was. Anyways, SID 3 will delete the C Drive automatically now, so there's no need to manually do it.

Is this when you are in another dashboard (like Evox or UnleashX) and trying to boot to it?
This could be because it's trying to boot xboxdash.xbe instaed of msdash.xbe
You'll have to check the config files of your dashboard to make sure it's loading msdash.xbe

Yes it happens when I am trying to load it from unleashx. I have a file called xboxdash but not one called msdash. And yes it is trying to load xboxdash in the config file. Does it matter that when I install the hacked dash I install it to the c drive and not the e drive?

No, don't do that, otherwise you'll lose your softmod.
There should be a msdash.xbe file there, are you sure that you're following the directions correctly?

OK using the meschassault sid
deleted all files on c
installed softmod
installed unleashx dash
using aid installed msdash
reinstalled softmod
applied patch
xbox restarted
now at this point it has both msdash.xbe and xboxdash.xbe
installed unleashx to c drive
created mod back up now I take out the line about loading the default skin to make it stop reseting the skin.
And now I feel like a complete and uter idiot because it worked. I will from now on be called "bucket head" Thank you have a nice day.
I don't understand but it worked so I will just sit down and be quiet. Thanks much have one on me.

Do I need to have AID on a disc? I only have a DVD-R XBOX drive and a DVD+R DVD burner (bitch, ain't it? )
Whenever I try to follow those instructions the patch always fails to work and comes up with an error message. Using SID 2.0 with Splinter Cell.
I question whether the AID I have is actually any good though, as the MAME emulator failed to install as well. Maybe I should try redownloading it. But everything else seems to work fine.

AID can go onto a DVD+R or DVD-R without a problem, actually that's my recommended media to use (CD-RWs are too slow).
With the constant error, make sure you've copied the gamesave properly. Three's 2 parts of the splinter cell gamesave you have to transfer to your unmodded xbox dont forget.
About the problems with AID, I'd say it's a bad burn, you shouldn't need to re-download it. Just try and burn it again eiether at a slower speed or on another brand of DVD.
Hope that helps...
