this can prob be answerd very simply as its in all the guides that you must make sure d0 is connected, but i dont thik any of them tell me why. will the chip not work at all without it or is it do do with the stealth mode for live? _________________ XBOX v1.4

The D0 is an integral part of modding...here's why. (I apologize if this gets long winded):
When Microsoft designed the Xbox they wanted to design the mobo(motherboard) in a way that they could test them on the assembly line. This way, they wouldn't have to assemble the Xbox, then test it and if there was a mobo failure, have to spend man hours disassembling and then troubleshooting. MS loses more than $100 on each machine they sell, so they do all they can to cut costs in effort to miniumalize their hardware losses. Their hopes are to make money on accessories (29.00 controllers) and games, not too mention XBL subscriptions.
So, they designed the LPC and the D0 to accomplish this testing. On the assembly line a device is used to connect into the LPC. Then, a connection is made at the D0. When the motherboard fires up the first thing it does is look to the D0 for a connection. The best anology I can use is like your PC looks to the floppy drive when it's first turned on...
Well, in the Xbox mobo case, if there is a connection at the D0 that signals the mobo to boot whatever is in the LPC holes. In MS's case, it's the test device that allows MS to verifiy the motherboard works. In our case, it's a mod chip. If no D0 connection is found upon startup, the mobo bypasses the LPC and boots the MS bios. This is why you can keep your chip in place and simply disconnect the D0 and your machine will boot up like a regular xbox.
So, to make a long story short...without a solid/good D0 connection the motherboard will NOT boot to the LPC meaning it will never eve know you have a mod chip installed.

ok ty modgod, at least i know my chip is workin prety much as it should then. the reason for the post was that evn though i booted the xbox with the chip off i still got banned almost instantly so i was wondering if it was this or something on my harddrive.
Does m$ just scan the dash you are using or does it check the contents of the hdd partitions (or for that matter the presence of an f partition) _________________ XBOX v1.4

Here is how I understand XBL banning to work, as I also now have a modded machine that works fine on XBL
If you use a stock machine or a modded machine on XBL the very first time you login it records some information. One piece of info they record is your HD serial number.
So, if you happen to change your hard drive AFTER you login for the first time a red flag will show and MS will scan the size of the HD. If the HD is larger than 10GB then your screwed and they ban you. They do not look at content, only size.
So, what I did was buy a virgin Xbox that was never on XBL. Then, I modded it and logged into XBL. All has been good for me for a few months now. I dont get on much, just enough to download content.
Good rule of thumb though, always keep your network cable unplugged so you dont accidently login to XBL while chip is enabled. Some games autolog in to XBL without your consent.
