Well, you heard this rumor hear first.
I heard through the grape vine that the reason Xbox stock is still at low levels in regard to retail stores, is because MS is shipping limited numbers of machines while they make modifications to eliminate the possibility of larger HD's being installed in the machines.
This puzzles me. What can MS do to the Xbox to make it not run with a larger HD, other than manipulate the stock BIOS. This would remove any chances of XBL playing, but if a chip is installed and flashed with a hacked bios then modding would still have it's benefits.
Can anyone else think of what they could do to create a problem, even if a chip is installed? What really makes me perplexed about this news is SmartXX's impending release of their own HD for the Xbox. Do they know something we dont??
If you look at the features of the SmartXX Version 2 mod chip you will see two features that puzzle me:
Fake Xbox Live Identity on the fly
Fake Xbox Live HDD on the fly
When I asked what that was at the SmartXX forums I was told that the features had something to do with SmartXX's HD that they are developing.
Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm.

Yeh that definatley makes you think does'nt it, the only ways I can think of are the stock bios which can be overidden by chip, an extended eeprom which can be editied, or maybe a file system that limits it or even the HD controller perhaps.
I hope it don't cause more problems tho

I’m confident that even after a few months most places will have a workaround. As long as something can be engineered it can be reverse engineered. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

I think it's going to be a modification to the eeprom. But, that will be overcome easily as you can hack an eeprom...
I really can't think of anything else besides more strict eeprom/hd marriage methods.

As long as eeproms are reprogrammable they will still get wtfpwned.
If I was the Xbox team I would stop trippin on old news and focus all the anti-hobbyist power on the Xbox 2.
How do you think we will do if there is no LPC in the XB2? I guess it really dosent matter so much. Its as if the LPC is nothing more than a convenient stand on the 1.6. _________________ -Scourge "Rx = +/_\"

Yeh I don't mind except it will take longer to mod them no doubt meaning I can get less done if it is a lengthy job like.

lol
Yea I agree it's a waste of time trying to change things now.
Another guess is they could have different sections where the IDE / Power plugs connect in, that would stop using standard HDDs.

The only way I figure they could stop hdd's over 8 or 10 gigs would be to make hardcore hardware changes to the IDE controller.
Even if they changed the power connector there are always other places you can get +/- 12VDC and +/-5VDC and make your own standard connection
But to make these changes in this stage of the game seems like a misuse of company resources on M$ part.
Just my thoughts anyway

I thought the rumor was there was no hard drive in the Xbox 2.....I think I read it here in a news article. If there is, I would have to stick with the new harddrive type theory, maybe not IDE, could be called XMS or some sh&%, maybe a connection difference but that would easily be solved as the DVD drives were. _________________ LED Rings $6 (doesnt include LEDs) LED ring pic
