In My honest opinion the best way is to first read up on the different versions, read up on version detection.
I recommend opening the machine and physically looking at a few of the tell tale signs. The video chip, and the power supply.
Here is a quick reference I posted in the tutorial section.
As far as modding your xbox, once you determine your version you also need to determine what you want you machine to have. Do you want a softmod, a TSOP flash or a mod chip.
Do you want a larger HD so you can store games on it, or do you want to keep the standard HD?
Once you get a little more direction, it will be much easier.
You will also have to learn that there is more to modding an xbox than installing a mod chip. You should learn how to FTP in and out of the xbox, how to burn an .ISO file, how to create an .ISO file and so on.
You need to know how to flash a mod chip if you go that route and what the advantages are to each type of modding, and more importantly the disadvantages. You have to determine if you want to solder or have someone else do it.
There are several of us on this forum that do work for the members and our own customers. Depending on what area you are from you may want to check into that if you are unsure what to do.

Just like anything it's always cheaper to do by youself. Anytime you cut out labor charges you are saving money.
It just depends on whether it's worth your time or not. I happen to be one of those types of people that has limited time. So, my time is very valuable, to me anyway. So, if I am going to get my cars oil chaned, sure I know how to do it myself and can do it for about $8.00. But, I would rather my dealership pick the car up at my home, take it in to their shop and charge me $21.95 to do the work.
Same goes for modding. If you do it on your own, you'll spend about $300.00 including a new machine. But, if you have someone else do it you'll pay about $360.00 plus shipping.
But, dependin on your modder you may walk away with a lot of added bonuses to your machine. A lot of people by mods from me because I load up over 10,000 emulator games on them. You have to watch out for some modders too. They will tell you that they are putting a chip in and they actually don't.
Get references, ask questions. Find out refund or return policies. Find out what you will have to do to the machine once you get it. Some modders won't even flash the mod chip.
later man

flashing the bios is basically free if you already own an xbox and a usb thumb drive or a friend with a modded xbox and a memory card. although i wouldn't have modded my xbox if i didn't have a hard drive to throw in her right away. but you can pick up a 120 gig hdd for around $70 here in the US.
