ok so im a dad who was tasked the job of entertainment and distraction, what better than a TB Hard drive of (mostly) kids movies and games and 5 xbox originals scattered around the house?
so im kinda new to xbox modding, i got the two in a dumpster a few years ago and it took me a little while to actually do anything because i didnt know about softmodding and hotswapping them, but i went with a tutorial i found on instructabes on free hotswapping and ndure. its much easier now with tools like sppv's installers etc.
i got the last xbox a few weeks ago for the master bedroom, the ages of all xbox's range one is a Japanese ntsc all other 4 are pal one 1.0(60GB) (had blown 110v psu but replaced it with another nz(230v) one with missing hdd and works great) 1.2(80GB) one 1.3(80GB) one 1.4(120GB) one 1.6(8GB).
i do have a few questions if you would care to share your advice.
these xbox are in need of some attention for instance the 1.0 and 1.6 both had sticky dvd drives (both samsung) and i fixed those with advice from someone on theisozone (rubber belt in hot water) but there are other things.
1. the 1.0 has a noisey gpu fan (for the first few minutes), should i upgrade/replace it as there is no way to oil it, its sealed (afaik) or can it be removed if i put in a bigger system fan or something?
2. they are going good right now, should i update the software such as unleashx, surreal64 and xbmc4xbox etc to latest versions or let well enough alone? (fyi three softmods have ndure, 2 have sid? SPPV pimped cd version from 6 months ago). i kinda want to update all of them before any software dissapears from the net, but im not sure if i will run into problems with kernel versions or dash's etc depending on the ages.
anyway thanks for all the work everyone does, there are still noobs around like me who enjoy this stuff. and my kids love the retro games through sega and nintendo emulators, they go to school talking about mario world and super nintendo and sonic, the other kids have never even seen an xbox original, but they dont have 4000 games on their 360's and movies at will.
also for my own personal sanity i use videodb to tell what games and movies i have and where they are located (media type etc eg hdd cdr dvd ... cd case 1 ....)

1. You can replace the GPU fan or replace the entire heatsink. The later models, as you have probably seen, use passive heatsinks. I think the GPU fan is a 5v one (be prepared to correct me) so if you can find a 5v one, then use it.
2. Yes, update at least XBMC. XBMC is great software and there have been some very good updates for it recently (FFmpeg and various mainline merges). I'm not sure if updating your softmod is necessary, just make sure your kids don't screw with anything in a filemanager.
If you want all videos and stuff to be for every Xbox in the house, use a networked storage device (on Samba or other supported file share) and then setup one Xbox to use it, then copy all settings to all Xboxes with FTP.
Almost forgot, welcome to the HQ! It's great to see new members posting with questions. _________________

For updating the Ndure XBOXs Id use Autobuilder (new release will be coming once Im done the new XBMC Installer)
For the SID ones Id use the new XBMC Installer when its released (which will be in a few days)
There will be loads of new stuff in my next round of installers, from interface changes to new emulators (busy busy busy over at Xtras and people Im sure will be happy with whats coming), new XBMC.
All of my main installers are getting done/updated (Emu Installer, XBMC Installer and Autobuilder-Ive discontinued Pimped and Spoof Disc installers)

ok that sounds great, i will just play around with my main machine and update xbmc for now on that one, the future sounds exciting.
thanks guys.
i have all my eeproms backed up in one spot so i can upgrade new drives when they pop up.
i might look into installing linux with e17 again i think that would look awesome on a projector or big screen. making some usb dongles with broken controllers or something,
i think im catching a xmodding bug. my goal when i try to make something happen is to do it on as little money as i can.
