Hey people, I'm not really a noob at modding but even I can't figure this one out. A while back my original xbox CD drive completely fried, i have no idea why, so i fitted the xbox with a brand new PC drive and 2 USB ports. but as most of you hopefully know, the xbox runs on special firmware that does not support PC drives. So anyways, what i need to do is somehow install an alternate dashboard (preferably unleashx or XBMC) so that the xbox will support the PC drive, but I also need to do it without having an xbox drive installed in the xbox. I know the option of a modchip is available but i honestly don't feel like paying 50+ dollars just to play my games again. i have also been on ebay to try and buy a new drive, but they usually get jacked up to about 60 bucks just because they're so rare now a days. Also i mentioned having installed a USB hub to my xbox in place of 2 controller ports, i do have a IDE to usb adapter that allows me to hook up a DVD drive. Could this possibly work? Thanks for any advice you may have.

Even with an alternate dashboard your PC dvd drive wouldnt work as it stands.
Theres a few DVD drives that can be modded easily enough to work in an xbox, or, if you have the patience, time and a logic probe you could get any drive to work with a bit of effort ..... but non of them are a straight swap.

Hey, thanks for the ideas, could you elaborate a little more on the logic probe or whatever it was, and the replacement drive is a OptoRite DD1203, OptoRite being a company that i have not heard of before this very minute.

Forget about the logic probe for now, its a bit of test kit for finding the logical states on various points of your drives pcb. (required for tray in, tray out, disc ready & eject)
your best bet is to get hold of a Samsung SD 616 dvd rom and mod that to fit your xbox. Revisions F and T of the samsung drive can be flashed with the firmware from the xbox sdg-605 drive enabling it to read original xbox games, revisions E and Q also work, but wont read original games.
Also the LG GDR-8163b dvd drive can be modded to work in a xbox, as can the LG GDR-8164b.
It fits in almost perfectly, the original DVD Drive bezel needs sticking on with some thick sticky back plastic so it aligns with the case, also the tray / caddy needs the (looking from the top of the xbox) front left post cutting down its length as it fowls the drive. _________________
