You can't use a normal PC dvd-rom drive in the xbox. Normal drives can't read xbox game discs, so you either have to buy a dvd drive off ebay that came out of an xbox or buy one of the special PC drives online that are able to be used in an xbox.

Computer drives don't work because the xbox has its own disc format that only a xbox drive can read. Its easier just to get one off ebay and pop it in.

It isn't just that, its also to do with the actual shape and size of the drive, as well as the power issue.

Xbox DVD drives are physically different, so a pc DVD drive doesn't fit into the caddy of the Xbox. As well as that, Xbox DVD drives are not 4-pin molex powered, so you'd need a Y-splitter inside the case somewhere.

Like darth said, if you pop an Xbox game into your PC DVD drive, it'll say the drive is empty. Xbox games are not the same format as normal games, just like the Xbox HDD is formatted to a FATX partition, which cannot be read by PC's.

There are always people selling bits and bob's though, both here and places like eBay, thats probably going to be your best bet I'm afraid mate.

Alright, then riddle me this batman...

I popped my Project Gotham 2's XBOX disc into my computer's tray style dvd-rom drive. It spun for awhile, and then windows exploder showed the dvd contents to be a standard Movie-style DVD (with a VIDEO_TS folder). I did a little more digging, and discovered that the disc is actually partitioned between the movie portion and the game portion which I assume is read by the xbox. My computer was able to extract the contents of that partition and copy it to my harddrive... why wouldn't Xebian be able to do the same? I mean, that is one of the major intentions of modding your Xbox, living a disc-less existance, right? It is for me, at least.

Please don't take any of my replies the wrong way, I realize you guys know WAAAAY more about this than I do. But certain circumstances and experiences have taught me that there never is single answer to a single question.

A PC drive will read the video files just fine, however it wont read xbox games. So unless your just going to watch movies on your xbox I wouldn't put on in.
