Here's a little background, on how it got to where it is.
The xbox was in a custom plexi case for about a year or so. It started to develop a short somewhere and i got sick of dealing with it, so i took it out, and put it back in the original case.
I found out that the psu was what was getting a short. I got it working, but was haveing some issues booting into unleashx, so i hotswapped the hd and reinstalled the softmod. Shortly after the psu gave up the ghost, smoke and all so i ordered a new psu.
Now the xbox turns on, but gives me an error 11, no dvd found. The dvd drive (lg 8163b) has very little use, and has never shown even the slightest bit of a problem. It's been a couple weeks, but i'm almpst postive that the dvd drive was not connected when the psu fried.
I've tried 3 different ide cables with no luck, checked my yellow cable, and it seems to be fine as well. Could the softmod have went wrong somewhere causing this, and need to be redone? _________________ Xbox 1.0

The only way to pin point it for sure is to try a diffrent dvd drive in it.

Agreed and its a pitty it is not the cheapest way also. Have you checked the actual power cable going from your drive to the motherboard to check for any signs of a short ? _________________ XBOX V1.6

have you got any mates with an xbox? if so ask them if you can try your dvd drive in their xbox, and then you might rule out the dvd drive. _________________ My Xboxes >>> http://uk.youtube.com/profile?user=XBMCXBOX <<<

Yeah try to find a friend who has a box that could swap the drive quick or else hit up an eb games or gamestop cause boxes are pretty cheap and you could just use the other one to dink around with. _________________ RastaCalavera

I have another xbox for the bedroom. I bought it at the same time that i bought the psu. That way i could run xbmc in each room. Soon as i can find my torx drivers i'll open it up and try the drive in that one.
The drive does power up, and i can open/close it with the xbox's eject button. I opened it up last night, too check the solder points, and everything is fine in there as well.
Daughters b-day party is tomorrow, but i'll update soon as i get a chance to swap drives. _________________ Xbox 1.0

There may also be a short on the board traces as well...which aren't fun to fix. _________________

A small update. I haven't been able to open the other xbox yet, but i remembered that when i changed the ide cable to the one i was using in the plexi case, i had to change the jumper on the drive. I changed it back to slave for the dvd, and master for the hd. Now i'm getting error 21.
I remember getting the same thing sometime back, and i had to reinstall the stock dash. Only difference was that i was still able to boot original games at that time but now i can't boot anything. I can't be sure till i can test the drive in the other xbox, but i think it's something to do with the hd.
I have a backup of a clean ms dash, incase i need it. _________________ Xbox 1.0

Ok, it's not the dvd drive. Threw it in the other xbox, and it boots fine. I'm gonna make a new xboxhdm disc with the clean dash files soon as i remember how
I'll update again after i try it out. _________________ Xbox 1.0

Thanks.
I have tried recovering the c: drive, and reinstalling the softmod numerous times, with no luck. I even used xbrowser to delete the c and e drives, and copy over a clean c and e, but no go
The drive still relocks after shutdown though. I'm hopeing to keep all my games that i have on the drive. I can always ftp them over again, but a few of them have gotten scratched, or broken. I have my eeprom/hd keys writen down, but have to find them. I moved recently, and the paper is in a box somewhere. I do remember the password though.
I tried the original hd as well, but i got the same error 21. As far as i can remember, the original hd worked when i pulled it. It may have given me an error 21 when booting to the ms dash, but it always booted to unleash with the power button.
I wonder if something happened to the mb when the psu smoked. There is no visible damage, and no smell.
I didn't make a new xboxhdm disc with the new dash cus i remembered that i have one with an older dash already burned. _________________ Xbox 1.0

Ok, tried to rebuild the original drive from scratch, but it didn't work. I found my hd password from the eeprom, so i tried to check the hd locking tools with the 80 gig drive, heres what i got:
Error - This drive has security enable - Disable it first
I tried to rebuild the 80gb hdd from scratch as well, and it still will only give me an error 21. I've tried everything i can think of short of chipping it, which i don't realy want to buy a chip and have it still not work. It may be time to retire the xbox unless anyone has another idea to try.
This really sucks. I still have the one i just bought, but the reason i got it was because i need 2. Now i'm right back to one. Wish i would have nerver build the plexi case. All would be fine right now if i had left it in the stock case. _________________ Xbox 1.0
