I am getting an error 7 during bootup. This means HDD Timeout. I have replaced the IDE cable making sure that the connections where seated well.
My question is, can I use AID to throw a new HD in my xbox and get it formatted and such. The xbox is chipped, X2. I do not have any sort of backup of the C: or eeprom.
I believe that the answer is yes since the box is already chipped. If this is the case, all I do is put the new HD in, boot the AID disc and follow the appropriate selection for Format/Prepare. Correct? If not can some one enlighted me?
Thanks,
tazukia

have you checked the jumper settings on the new HDD, it needs to be set to cable select

I have not, but I have not actually tried the new HD. Wanting to make sure that what I think will happen is correct.
I will however be sure to check. Thanks...

Not true some Xboxes also allow you to set the HD to master. Thats what the 40gb WD HDD is set too and it works perfectly fine. So I'd try both settings and see where that gets you.

You can only use AID to install a new HD if you have a modchip. If you do you would just put the new HD in and boot AID it should ask if you wish to install the new HD and then just follow the steps. _________________

That's what I was hoping to hear. Yes my current Xbox is chipped. Gonna try and get back up and running this weekend.
Thanks for the info...

For your information it is true, although setting to master may work you should set the HDD to cable select as this will match the DVD drive settings. If you have a device on an IDE bus set to cable select (as the dvd drive is) you should set all devices on the same bus to the same setting!

You might want to try a different ide cable too because yours might be bad. If its fine, then formatting the drive with aid will work fine. _________________

Dude if it works on master as well as cable select than what you said is half right I'm not sayin you're wrong but it doesn't have to be set on cable select. And yes its true it SHOULD be set on cable select and prolly will increase the life of your hardware slightly. _________________

I'm debating about trying the same thing with my xbox, except I don't have a mod chip, but instead used the softmod. I'm assuming that will also work as well since I can boot the AID disk from my xbox. Any reason to think this isn't correct?

Thanks for the links. I'm pretty new to xbox hacking in general, I only started because I was looking for a way to play old NES.SNES games on my TV easily, and it was cheaper to mod my xbox than it was to buy 2 USB wireless controllers for my notebook (and a lot easier to keep an XBOX hooked up to the TV).
I'm debating now whether the new HD upgrade is worth it for me. I'm not really going to be ripping games to the HD, but I would like the space to be able to install all the emulator games on the HD instead of off of disk though the BAED's play well and have pretty much everything.
So far everything works good except for the old midway games which play like garbage. I've heard the older versions of Mame-X beta6 play them, but I have been unable to find it, I suppose that's what happens when you start trying to mod an xbox 2 years after the xbox360 obsoleted much of the interest in it.

No man if you just useing it to run the emus you dont need the hdd upgrade, i found you can fit a lot of emus and roms on the stock hdd and if you got a seagate hdd you can up it to 10gb from the stock 8gb.
