A bit about me to explain-
I am not much of a gamer, really, and those games I DO play are usually played on a linux computer.
Which explains why I am so slow to XBox, and modding an XBox.
I do however now have one, since a friend upgraded to XBox 360 and knew I was interested in XBox Linux and modding.
Looking at the various options is leaving me slightly baffled, since I am SO new to this subject, but I have a few goals in mind and hope that folks here can help clarify things and maybe help me to decide how and IF to proceed.
My goals:
1)run xbox linux
2)maintain XBox gameplay functionality (though XBox Live is not neccessary)
3)play backup copies of games
4)upgrade hard drive size if possible
5)relocate system to a custom enclosure
Starting at the last and moving up to the more critical points-
5) This is easy, so no questions here.
4) When used as linox box, likely uses include network file storage so a decent sized hard drive is a huge plus.
3) Old games get scratched up. Being able to play using backups would save me from having to buy new copies of games I already HAVE. IF I can find them...
2)While I do not game much, occasionally it happens in social situations and retaining the ability to play XBox games is pretty crucial
1) I love getting linux running on ANYTHING (done iPods, PDAs and of course a boatload of computers). But in reality, the slowest computer I have NOW is 1.5 Ghz, so this is more for fun than NEED.
I have done some looking around, and what appears to ME to be the best overall solution is a modchip, but there are a bunch of THEM as well.
The two most expensive stand out to me as the most flexible and useful, but other options might meet my goals just as well. This would be good because I am cheap. (Though I do spend when I need to.)
The two I am talking about are the SmartXX v3 and the
Xecuter 3 CE.
I am also wondering if there is any advantage to the solderless install compared to soldering the units?
I am not afraid to solder so much- I have done computer mods and volt mods for a few years now....
Advice and suggestions, please. _________________ nOOb to XBox

Id get a X3 CE with solder install. Solderless things become a pain in the ass after a while. They move all the time, they have to have something to hold them down, the problems list just keep going on. Just get a soldered chip, then upgrade your HDD. After that i can't help you much, since ive never installed or used xbox linux. _________________
