Put simply a bios is something that runs in the background of the operating system. Its main purpose is to tell the system what to do at startup. In the xbox's case it will start a specified .xbe file eg the xbox dashboard.

A lot of people think bios stands for 'Built In Operating System' which, it is kinda in a way. But, it truly stands for 'Basic Input Output System'. It is the set of rules that your machine has to go by so to speak. Without the bios, your system wouldn't be able to do much of anything such as load the main OS (operating system).

In the xbox case, Microsofts bios limits the machine to what type of code it is allowed to run. A hacked bios such as one that is flashed to a modchip will give the xbox more freedom...like to run unassigned code for instance.

Without a hacked bios the modchip is pretty useless...at least for what most people want to do.

When your xbox boots up and the modchip is properly found, it will then load the bios that is on the modchip. The modchips bios then tells it what to initially execute, such as the EvoX dash.

Whereas the MS bios tells the xbox to boot the MS Dash. The bios can also control things such as fan speed. The hacked bios can really be manipulated using certain tools. You can change the color of your power button to be red instead of green, you can make your X blue instead of green, you can make the fan go faster, you can even allow for larger HD's to be utilized.

I hope we answered all you needed to know.
