Welcome Shauny!
I've never been able to use a crossover cable to get my Xbox & PC talkin'. I can use a patch cable with both a router with no problems... basically I just plug both of them into the router and then use Flash FXP to get 'em communicating.
Someone will come along who can tell you how to do it with the crossover (system link) cable. I've never really pursued the issue, as i just use the router. _________________ The World's Most Awesome Xbox 360 Room

A router is what you use to allow your internet connection (broadband) to be shared among devices. For instance, a standard router connects to your cable or dsl modem and then has four outputs so you can connect up to four devices to your internet. You could hook up your PC, Xbox, and two other Pc's if you need.
The router acts as a middle man between your PC and Xbox and basically is a home network of devices.
To use a crossover cable you should check out our tutorials. I personally have never used one so I don't want to give you any eroneous information, but I am pretty sure it just connects between your PC and Xbox.
You have to rip games to your xbox HD first using PxHDD loader or any other game ripping app you like. You then FTP the game from your xbox to your PC and create a xISO file with another application. You can then burn it to DVD R of your choice and play it on a modded xbox.
Hope that helps.

Just got around to using a cross-over cable last week to connect to my pc. Every thing went fine i was able to "see" the xbox but I could not make an ftp connection. Then it just started working after about a half hour. I'll get you the exact settings I used so you can start there
There are three areas that need to be addressed when making any connection (crossover or router).
Physical - meaning is there a "link" light when you plug everything in. If you get the green/yellow led to light up on the xbox lan port and the pc network card..you have a good physical connection.
Protocol - this is where you get the network talking. check out the tutorial sections for this. It covers basic networking settings, ip address, masks, and subnets. I'll get you this info.
Programs- Some of the programs need to be configured to connect to the XBox, generally just feed it the information used when you set up the network protocols. Also make sure that FTP/Network is enabled in your Xbox Bios.
SO, in the end yes you can use a crossover cable..it's all in the details! _________________ XBOX v1.1
