Is there a difference between these cables?
I ask because, hooking up my router to my xbox via ethernet does seem to work, (i can ftp in) but it will no longer connect to the internet, this is something to do with the wiring in my house...phonelines and stuff .. only works on the master..????
anyway i thought the best solution was to get a long ethernet cable to reach my router where it works..good idea??
thanks for your help people

There are 2 different types of ethernet cable, straight and crossover.
Crossover cables are used to connect directly from one thing to another (for example, pc to xbox, pc to pc) whereas straight cables are used to connect your pc to routers, switches and bridges.
Switches and routers require straight cables to get functionality. Are you connecting your Xbox to your router, or to your pc? _________________

If you can ftp then you have the right cable. Check that your DNS settings are set correctly (usually on a router it is the same as your default gateway) also make sure you are not using the http proxy in your xbox settings. Both of these will cause you to not connect to the internet but still be able to FTP. Another alternative is to enable DHCP on your xbox to auto configure your network settings. Hope this helps.

set your DNS server to that of your ISP. Check the router settings. You should see Public ip, subnet mask and gateway along with DNS server.
as a test try this DNS server if you want
