Hello, i have just softmodded my xbox u-leached dash, then i put media centre on instead. But every time i rebooted the box it would randomly pick wich dash it used...so here is the problem i formatted ALL partitions and put the media centre on it rebooted xbox and it all went wrong and i get service error 13. Tryed a hot swap but no luck used a bootable linux disk on my pc to rebuild the drive but still no luck. i have brought 2 drives off ebay and the giver service error 5. Is there anything i can appart from a mod chipin it?

a softmodded xbox needs a locked hd .
and it needs to be locked with the eeprom from that xbox.
so what you can do is hotswap to fix your retail hd (if it is still locked)
Ok. the HD was formatted so the eeprom has gone and i formatted the partition with the backup on it...so does that only leave mod chip then >C:

No, you can still do a hotswap, just did one last week without eeprom. I'm at work right now, but will post details when I get home.

just follow pirrup's tutorial http://xbox-hq.com/html/xbox-tutorials-161.html, its pretty straight forward, if you have trouble finding msdash, pm, I'll get it to you. Took me a couple of attempts my first time, but it does work.

You don't have to wait, as long as you unplugged power from dvd drive in xbox, then power up, you'll get the service screen, then swap ide cable from your computer. Should be good to go, it did take make a few attempts the first time I hotswapped.

Dude! That is amazing. Yesterdays goal was simply to upgrade versions of some of my software. I softmodded using a method other than SID a few months ago, and basically I somehow got everything all monkeyed up when I tried to do the upgrade. I'm not going to say I didn't do any stupid bold moves (it was a long, complicated day with my wife wondering why the hell things were getting worse). Either way, I'm left with a totally buggered harddrive, and all I can do is load games. I can't even do the "Run Linux" through Mech Assault because the system doesn't recognize the memory card. One note I'd add from my experience.
- The timing of unplugging the IDE from the xbox was important. I was doing this without even using the xbox display at first. I'd just wait till it was turned on and then continue on with the directions. The drive would come up as not unlocked, or as the primary slave drive. I found another post with someone saying you had to pull the cable out JUST before the standard error screen comes up:

When I did this, everything worked like a charm.
Thanks pirrup et al.
