I have a question bout this goddamn networking shit, I am trying to network using my dlink NIC and a router, a netgear fast ethernet switch (I am assuming this is a router) do i need a special program for the router to work or what? everytime i connect a ethernet cable from my NIC to my router? my comp freezes. I've tried everything, upgrading to xp, different NICs, i dont know what else to do........the only thing i can think of (besides buying a new comp or upgrading the one i got) is to try a crossover cable and connect the pc directly to the xbox, im lost..... _________________ "Pain has a face, allow me to show it to you."

So my netgear switch is just a hub? hmmmm........so when i get the router tho does it need any special software or will it come with the software to do it? and does anyone know if the crossover cable would remedy the comp freezing up? _________________ "Pain has a face, allow me to show it to you."

A router normally has the software built into it and the difference between a router and a hub or switch is
Routers are physical devices that join multiple wired or wireless networks together. Technically, a wired or wireless router is a Layer 3 gateway, meaning that the wired/wireless router connects networks (as gateways do), and that the router operates at the network layer of the OSI model.
Hub is a small, simple, inexpensive network device that joins multiple computers together.
Network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together within one local area network (LAN). Technically, network switches operate at layer two (Data Link Layer) of the OSI model.
