I appologize if this has been covered before, but from looking at the tutorials section, and boards, I dont think it has. Now, on to the problem:
I have an xbox that I modded for a friend using the Splinter Cell NTSC/Auto-Installer Deluxe 1.01/2.0 softmod. It went easy enough, and I made sure to back up the c-drive contents to the e-drive using the included backup utility. Everything was fine and dandy. Gave it back to him, and the only problems I heard about was that he was having difficulty reading certain burned discs, which I heard was a problem with the Samsung DVD equipped x-boxes (I havent had any trouble with my Thompson DVD drive in my personal x-box). Anyways, now he starts telling me about a new problem, where his machine just comes up with an x-box live updater when he turns it on, says it cant connect, and doesnt let it go anywhere beyond there.
His xbox was set to launch unleashedX on boot, but sure enough, it powers on, goes through flubber, then goes immediatly to the old green dashboard. It just says that its attempting to update from xbox live, says it cant connect, and only gives you the option to retry. I've got the xbox set to load autoinstaller deluxe if the tray is open on boot, this doesnt work. The machine also will not boot off of any discs. Ignores them completely. So the drive is pretty much screwed at this point, and I need to know what can be done to recover it. I've tried to use some of the "hard drive swap" utilities/tutorials, but get stuck when it comes to locking/unlocking the hard drive. All of these tutorials are centered around having a functional xbox that can get to EvoX.
The only thing I can think of that may have caused this, was if someone had tried to access X-box live through a game, and it tried to update the content.
Tools at my disposal:
2PCs running windows XP, with DVD recorders and card driven raid arrays, so attaching a drive as primary master isnt an issue.
Torx driver set for opening the console
1 functional softmodded xbox
Spare molex power cables and 40/80pin IDE cables
Auto-Installer deluxe
Possible solutions I've thought about:
Pulling his drive durring flubber to unlock it, then hotswapping it to my xbox after evox is running to get the key (though it may not work, depending on when evox generates the key, and its eepom dependant)
Pulling his drive durring flubber to unlock it, then hotswapping it to the working xbox with the UnleashedX FTP running, and just manually transfer the boot files over. It should lock itself again next boot, right?
--------
Anyways, any input would be great on this. I've been struggling trying to find safe methods of recovering the drive, and havent been particularly successful. I'm willing to try anything, as long as it doesnt involve purchasing a new hard drive for his xbox. Thank you in advance for your time and expertice.

Its really no different from starting again then.
If its booting to the normal M$ Dashboard then more the likely the dashboard has been updated by LIVE (like you mention) and the softmod is gone..
You will need to reinstall the softmod again i think..
Try that.. As longas you can boot ORIGINALS there is no harm in reinstall the softmod.. But this time.. use SID3 which is the latest installer.. It is nearly 100% bug free and going through final testing stages now.
Also you could look into this tutorial for softmods if you are getting errors and you cant recover:
Pirrup, thank you, the hot swap tutorial looks great, and I'm gonna give it a shot soon. Just have a few more nagging questions regarding the swap tutorial and existing information on the drive. The drive I need to recover has saved game information, and a backup of their original MS dashboard, and all that good stuff.
Is the XBOXHDM utility gonna wipe the E: drive while its restoring C?
Also, its still just got the stock hard drive, with no ambition to change it to a bigger drive. Is creating an F partition necessary, or should I choose NO at that part?
Lastly, I grabbed the entire contents of my xbox via FTP, which is successfully softmodded and running UnleashX. If I drop that into the "\\xboxhdmlinux\C" folder and make the .ISO using that, is it gonna work just fine? Should I just download the stock dash again, and redo the softmod again?
Thank you again for pointing me in the right direction!

for the F drive just chose NO so it only rebuild your C drive.
yes you can use your backup C and put that in the C folder , this way after the hotswap your xbox is modded like it was before
It sounds to me like he may have deleted something that may have been needed..
Just a thought.....
