I have painted my xbox now I having trouble getting the metal piece on the top back on. I was wondering if this piece is really needed or can I leave it off.

Pretty much everybody leaves that metal piece off, including me. In my opinion it is not neccessary. Just curious why you took it off though, because you don't paint the inside of the case, do u?

I removed mine because I added a jewel light.

Yeah, as soon as I opened my case up, I removed the metal underpart. I added a jewel LED kit as well so that was my main reason. When you paint a case it is a good idea to paint the underside as well, makes the paint job look more even from the outside. Plus, if you ever wanted to sell it, people would flip out if the underside was black and it was painted on the outside. In my opinion at least.

But to answer your question formally, no, it is not needed.

I wanted to scrape the jewel and paint it a different color. thats why I took the metal piece off
