Hello all. I picked up an xbox with a busted dvd for $30. I Would Like To use it for an avi player and emuStation. Any Wayz I've been trying to mod for days now an finally got a good backup of the original drive. So Now I need help on figuring exactly what files need to be replaced on the drive... Oh Kernal an dash are 4034. thankx U

Hi,
You will need to borrow a dvdrom from another xbox to get it modded more then likely.. Modding it manually would be a nightmare especially softmodding.
Personally i would install a modchip but thats up to you.
Im sure some of the other softmod guys will have comments anyway.
good luck with it.. Im sure it will work just fine once you get it modded how you want. I love my XBMC!

Ok. So I finally got hdd driver working. After taking out the refs to FATX with winhex. And to my suprise,, ...Apearently someone has tried to mod this machine before.
I opened the hard drive with hdd and there is only a System, and Game Cache2-folder. I was worried I mighta done something wrong in winhex but I went over and over the directions and made a backup beforehand. So I'm sittng here trying to figure out what's up cuz I know I didn't make a mistake....
And sure enough as I was going through the backup with winhex I found references to UnLeashX in the text portion of the window.
So I'm assuming the original files for this thing are toast. An I was wondering If anyone has any bright ideas. Seeing as how it doesn't have all the directories even if I got a drive it probably wouldn't boot a game. but i'm just guessing. could I use hd prepare does that make all the directories...
...Figures I'd come across something like this on my first try.
I know there's gotta be a way around this. please help.

I modded my Xbox by doing a Hotswap and HDM 1.9 with the UDE2 exploit for HDM found on #xbins.
It worked great (It did take a few tries to get it right though). After that I put in the AID 2.11 disk on CD and everything is easy now.
Just remember: If you hear your HDD click when you unplug the IDE cable, it moved too much and the HDD re-locked itself. _________________ I think I like fixing Boxes more than using them!

I was in the same postition as you, Lost all content on HD on softmod xbox. Was able to recover using the info below. You can Thank pirrup for the useful Tutorial.
Needed Tools:
- xboxhdm 1.9
- Torx 10 And Torx 20 Screwdrivers - To Open XBOX
- A PC(remove all hd's) ,blank CD-R/W and A CD Burner
- DVDdecryptor (http://www.dvddecrypter.com)
- C drive backup or latest MS dash

Steps:
1. if you got a backup of your c you don't need to download latest msdash, if you don't got a backup download ms dash and keep it ready on your pc.
2. unpack xboxhdm onto your pc .
3. put ms dash in the C folder into the xboxhdmlinux folder and overwrite the ones already there.
4. In the root of xboxhdm is a file named 'make-iso-win', run this file and wait for it to finish.
5. It will make a .iso file. (burn this file with dvddecryptor), put the cd in the pc .
6. unplug the XBOX DVDROM IDE cable, take the power cable off the dvd-rom.
7. Turn on the PC, Before the PC BIOS looks for hard drives, hit the Pause/Break key. It should pause at this time.
8. Turn on the Xbox .
9. It will boot to an error code(nr 11) regarding the dvd-rom, but the hdd will be unlocked, this way you'll get xboxhdm to access it on first attempt
10. Hit space bar to continue booting the PC. If it takes a long time to boot (several minutes), then the HD has not been unlocked.
11. you will get a menu,now choose Option 1 (by typing ‘1’) and press enter to boot VGA console with xbox-drive utilities (default). Type ‘xboxhd’ when it asks you for a login. Another list of options will show up, choose option 1 again (the one that says ‘Build a new Xbox HD from scratch’) and it will begin to format and write the partition table etc. when it asks you about C type yes and when it asks you if you would like an F select yes .
12. power down pc and xbox.
13. put the hd back in the xbox and boot.
Nice you just recovered your hard drive !!!
PS if you get a msg about a frozen drive , just disable auto detect for the drive (xboxhdm will detect the hd even if it's disabled!)
