Well, after 2 weekends of planning, dremeling, painting, etc., i've finally finished my slimbox.
It's a 1.4, with an X3 (X3 3294), and a Maxtor 250. Llamma's ATA 166 cable, and external plug for a dvd drive (not really mounted yet...)
I mounted 2 70mm fans, one were the jewel is, and one in the stock place. Both running 12v. Keeps it cooled at about 117F constantly.
Oh yeah, softmodders...do not attempt. You need your dvd drive to boot your box.
Feedback, questions, or ideas welcome.

That's really cool, thanks for the idea, I might try to find a spare one to do this with, it would be a great xbmc machine. How difficult is it to make it that much smaller? any rewiring? other than the fan of course. Also how'd you do the screws just find similar ones that were shorter? _________________

Thanks Sjohn 17mm was my magic number...Cut the front where the "line" is, and the side vents down 17mm, there was alot on the inside I had to dremel out to make it squeeze together. No rewiring, just the fans. I'll find the tut I based this build on...here
edit: for the screws, I'm just going to get ones 17mm shorter than stock. I have a feeling those might work. _________________

D00d, imp, that thing is insanely sick and slim. I love it, man. Love it. I have an old aladdin chip layin around that I might mess around and try to restore my 1.4 box (seeing as how I don't have a DVD drive for it ) make that sucker a slim box too... Great job, good on it, m8. _________________ "That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger."

sweet as, love the design, especially the top fan, but i cant help thinking that you could squeese a little bit more out of it. I'l have a play with a spare case I have and see what i can mock up.
I am completely saluting your box tho, it does look cool you cant deny that. (If M$ are listning it would be a good start for an official slimbox, maybe with a slot load or top load tray??)
Keep up the good mork man

had a couple of ideas but im not sure how feasable yet.
I first started looking at smaller hard drives and as a random google find i found this, which could be very interesting for slimbox modders
It is a 12GB Hdd measuring just 30mm x 40mm so it could even be vertically mounted inside this slimbox design allowing space for a DVD aswell.
Then i got to thinking, why does the drive have to open from the front? How possible would it be to mount the drive sideways or backwards and drop it down by the same 17mm? You could even make a top load drive and disconnect the tray or the eject mech. From the pics of the internals it looks like there may just be enough space.
Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for that AngelosDracul, give it a shot if you have a spare case.
Thedude2004, those 1" cell phone harddrives are nice, but 12 gigs just wouldn't give me the space I need for a full blown media center.
I suppose you could cram a dvd drive in there somewhere...
This sketch for a side ejecting one, (couldn't upload BMP) i would need to nix the power supply to the motherboard, and hard wire it. Also would take some custom fabrication to the dvd case itself. I would have to lay some capacitors flat on the board. In other words, too much f***ing trouble. Well maybe a laptop drive or something would fit better, but the you would have to go and modifiy that if you wanted to play xbox original disks...
I'm on a network with my computer and other xbox's, so getting media via dvd is not necessary to me. Now that you got some ideas floating around, get your hand on a spare case and see what it can do. _________________

Hope this doesn't sound like too stupid of a question - I assumed the box would run w/out the DVD, I have run them with out the HD - can you replace the DVD with a second HD?
If so, you could do some case modding and have a removable drive. _________________ xbox v1.0 - DuoX 2 - Seagate 160GB - caught fire and is no more

Yeah rausch713, xbox can only utilize 1 hdd at a time. No matter what the jumpers are set to. Maybe through linux, BSD or another OS. Not sure. I might just rig this box up with two hdd's. I would have to turn them to fit them side by side. Then, a rocker or toggle switch would choose what drive to boot from.
P.S. Like the controller port colors??? Thanks again for hooking me up with them. _________________
