what r u tryin 2 achive? depending on softmod it may give u pbl or nkpatcher system phoenix bios loader or newkernalpatcher
eiteher way it lets u run any unsign code.. so u dont need damn chips.. laterz

well i softmoded the xbox (the one that is fucked) and then run linux then linux formated the hdd but i didnt make any backups but i do have anover xbox wicth i softmoded with 80GB hdd drive in it iv read up that if i was to unlock my hdd drive from the xbox that works and put it in the over xbox (the busted one) and set the clock and it would then boot a

a softmodded xbox is like a retail xbox , it needs a locked hd locked with the eeprom from that xbox .
all you can do now is buy a chip so you don't need a locked hd .
ps about the bios : a softmodded xbox has still the retail bios as it doesn't get changed. all it does a softmod is using another bios .( but the real bios laods first then the hacked bios)
