I have been researching moding xboxes for about a week now and came across your site over the weekend, and this is by far the best site I've found. After going over some tutorials and realizing that it doesn't look too difficult to mod an xbox I ordered a refurbished xbox online, along with a Xenium solderless Modchip. I also have a 160GB Maxtor 7200RPM hard drive to add to the package. I should be recieving all of these later this week and I feel pretty comfortable installing the mod chip and hard drive, but don't know exactly what I need to install to get everything working right. I donated $10 to become a VIP member last night and am just waiting to have access to the download section. I want to have everything downloaded and ready to install once I get the box later this week. So far this is what I think I need, but was wondering if I could have a little guidance as to anything else. I'm going to flash my bios to the Xecuter2 Bios, and then I will run the XBox-HQ EvoX Autoinstaller v1.2. I also want to install an emulator and noticed that there is an XBox-HQ Emulator Autoinstaller. Once I install all of these is there anything else that I need to install, or am I ready to go? I know that I need to find some ROMs for the Emulators, but other than that is there anything? Any insights would be great!!! Also, I noticed that many of you have two Dashboards. Is this necessary, or is just the EvolutionX one sufficient? Thanks.

First of all welcome to xbox-hq and good luck woth your modding. You have made a good choice with the xenium it is probably the best around. I think you have everything there you need. Once your chip, hard drive and bios is installed and you've run the auto installer you will have different directories on your hard drive. If you want to install another application just put it in the apps folder. That simple, evox can auto detect the new application. There isn't really much point in using 2 dashboards but I do. The main reason is looks. I use Media X Menu which can use game preview videos in the skin and play background music, you just have to try it. But as a good starter evox is superb. I keep it as it provides a lot of useful info on drive space and temperatures so it's good for checking on your xbox's health if you need to. Hope that helps and if you need anything else just ask, there are loads of people on this site with a wealth of knowledge. Enjoy Very Happy

Thanks. Another quick question. I'm not sure where I read it, but in another posting someone mentioned that the 7200RPM hard drives run hotter. Should I look into upgrading my fan as well?

I don't see the need. I have 7200 rpm 250gb maxtor drive and I haven't needed to upgrade any fans.

Also, I have head that the 7200rpm feature is superfluous anyway as the xbox is only capable of utilizing the HD at 5400RPM...not sure if that is true, but just thought I'd share that.

Some people who have 250, 300 GiG HD's install extra fans, but 160 will be fine the way it is..

Good luck!

Really? Do you know if there is a way of measuring my drive rpm speed then? I just think it might be interesting to see if it's true.

i dont know of one but in Aus you can only buy 7200rpm drives that will fit in the xbox. It would have been around in 2002 when the 7200 rpm. The only hdd i know that is less are your external ones and there gonna be taken over by 7200 as well soon.

Yeah I know what my drive speed is it's 7200 it's just that realmcloy said that it's rumouredthe xbox only uses it at 5400. Having just thought about this I would doubt it would do that as the drives motor would be responsible for the speed not the thing it's used in. What's more probable is that the IDE controller on the xbox doesn't have a high enough data transfer rate to utilise the extra speed given by a 7200 drive.

Maybe it's a bios thing? For instance I just got a bios upgrade for my HP Media Cener PC to slow down the fan. Even though it can go faster, the bios limits it's speed.

I'll try to find the documentation in regard to the HD and the speed limits in the Xbox.

I'd be curious to know if it's accurate. Cuz, was thinking maybe 5400RPM drives would be less expensive. Not sure. I did some snooping on other sites and looked at what people were running, and I see A TON of 5400 RPM'd HD's.

Still looking for some info, but found an interesting chart that shows what HD's are lockable and compatible with the Xbox...very cool.

Let me know if you find anything please. I'd be interested to know if the drive is slowed. I know you can get BIOSes that speed up the xbox fan. Be nice to know as my 250gb 7200rpm cost a stupid amount of money.

hi guys,

Im sure M$ chose the 5400 rpm HDD for xbox because of the Heat a 7200 rpm can produce.. That was the only reason i could think of..

I installed a 7200 rpm but seriuosly could not tell any difference in speed etc. There may be a slight difference but i doubt it worths mentioning..

btw.. like realmccloy mentions a bios can control anything really.. Depending on how the xbox mainboard was designed of course..
