I am new here and know very little about xbox bios and hardware, etc. However I do know a fair bit about PC hardware, if that helps. I was surprised when I heard the later version xboxs have XBL already on, and they can read cd-rs. I am wondering if I can update or create/mod my xbox so that it will be able to read burned disc's, mainly music cd's. I'v read around alittle and do not want to get caught with hacked XBL, so maybe I can pass on that. Any help, suggestions, guides on doing so etc, would be greatly apreciated.

Have you looked into any of the xbox games that are music specific? I think there is or will be a MTV Music Generator 3 ,and alread is a Xbox Music Mixer type of game. You could always check into that. You probably won't be able to use CDR's or MP3 format though. Now, by changing to Linux, I am sure you may gain some advantage in what media you machine may read, but I can't be for certain. We have some people here that know more about the Xbox Linux than I. I am sure they will confirm what it can or can't do for you. If it does help you at least you aren't crossing the gray area that you want to stay away from.

Good luck and welcome to the site!

I have a version 1.0 xbox, oldie but a goodie as far as I'm concered. I have the dreaded thompson dvd, incase you dont know it is the pickiest of the xbox harddrives in terms of reading media. You can copy music onto your xbox hard drive without moding it. YOur xbox just has to be able to read the cd. I have only gotten my xbox to read 1 cd-r, but it reads a handful of cd-rw's, just not the really cheap ones. If you use a retail cd or cd-rw you should be able to put music on your xbox no problem and then play in the games that alow you to alter the sound track. I hope thats of some help. Good luck and welcome Very Happy

How do I tell which version I have? I know it's not a new one, it's pretty old, got it a month or so after xbox came out. I'v taken it apart to look around and see what she has. so I caould find it if you tell me where abouts I should look.

Also, my HDD was a western digital, if that helps.

if its that old you most likely have a v 1.0 with a thompson dvd drive. but it could be a different version. Check the tutorials section, theres some in ther to tell you have to check the version of your xbox.

http://www.northpointeauto.com/html/dvdcomparison/dvdcomparison.htm

I uploaded a little page to one of my sites I maintain. This will help you, but regardless of what drive you have if it isn't a hacked bios will it read anything except game, or music disks? I didn't think it would read cdr's or cdrw's if it was the MS bios. I thought the bios would restrict your xbox to certain types of media, then once the bios was hacked it was then up to your dvd drive to how picky it wanted to be.

Am I correct on that?

I played copied DVD's and put music files off of cd-rw's before I modded my xbox. I had read that you shouldnt be able to, but just with the dvd playback kit, I could.

Very interesting. The copied DVD's don't surprise me much, but the CDRW's do. What music format?

Wow, anyone else out there able to play MP3's on their stock box? I have two stocks and I can't get them to recognize shit. I can put music cd's in, but not burnt ones. I literally have to have a bought music CD. And, I cannot get it to recognize MP3's either. I have Samsung DVD drives all the way around too...
