Hey guys, I read a lot of issues on the forums out there in regard to soldering the SmartXX LT OPX to the underside of the 1.6 mobos. So, here's a tip for you.

Basically, what I do is first check the chip and make sure that there are no metal shavings covering the solder points. If so, just move them aside with a very small precision screwdriver or even a pin.

Once that is done, map out your solder points on the mobo. Now, the only two points I do not do this to are the ground and the 3V3 because these are rather easy to solder to begin with.

But, on the other points before I lay the chip down on the mobo I go ahead and put a small dab of solder on the tip of my iron. I frequently change my tips too, that helps. But, it just looks like a little bubble of solder on the tip. I then just hit the solder point so the solder adheres right to the mobo point.

Once I have my 6 out of 8 spots prepped, I go ahead and lay the chip down. I line up the solder points on the chip to the areas on the mobo and use three pieces of electrical tape to hold the chip in place. Try to get it as flat as you can.

Then, I go ahead and put the tip of my iron on one of the chips solder points and push some solder on it while it's heating. The solder will then flow down to the point on the mobo that you already soldered and form a nice joint.

There you go Smile I hope that helps.

do you recommend doing the solder method or the pinheader?

For the 1.6 the quicksolder because thats how it was designed to be installed.

But, for 1.0-1.5 use the pinheader instead of the quicksolder.

You can use the pin heade for the 1.6, but you will still need to do the LPC rebuild then and also make a slight modification to the chip otherwise your dvd drive will not eject. The little tab that is labeled 'RDO' has to be broken off before you try using the pin header install method on the 1.6.

Doing the quick solder on the underside of the 1.6 mobo has it's ups and downs. But, if you take five minutes to prep the chip and the mobo points you will have a better success rate at first boot not fragging. Occasionally I still have to hit my solder points a second time with this chip, but so far I have not had any real problems since my first batch.

In the first batch I ever got the chips were machined very poorly and I ended up getting one that just would not work in a quick solder scenerio and I had already popped off the pin header mount so the chip is useless.

That is why I check my chips now prior to breaking that off.
